What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger train introduced by Indian Railways to cater to the long-distance travel needs of migrant workers and other budget-conscious travellers. First flagged off in late 2023, these trains are
designed to connect cities more than 800 kilometres apart. Unlike the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat consists of non-air-conditioned sleeper and unreserved general seating coaches, making it a more affordable option for the masses. The core idea is to provide a modern, faster, and more comfortable travel experience without the premium price tag, addressing the high demand for travel in non-AC classes.
The Technology That Makes It Different
A key innovation in the Amrit Bharat Express is its use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the back. The front engine pulls the train while the rear one pushes, allowing for significantly faster acceleration and deceleration. This technology helps save considerable time, especially on routes with frequent speed restrictions due to curves or bridges. Furthermore, the trains are equipped with semi-permanent couplers, similar to those on the Vande Bharat, which drastically reduce jerks during starts and stops, ensuring a smoother ride for passengers. With a maximum operational speed of up to 130 kmph, these trains are built for efficiency.
The 7 New Routes Connecting India
The Railway Board has approved seven new services that will weave a new web of connectivity across the country. These routes connect major industrial, religious, and urban hubs across several states. The newly sanctioned trains include: a long-distance service from Dhanbad in Jharkhand to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu; a route from Charlapalli near Hyderabad to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh; and a service connecting Gorakhpur to Bandra in Mumbai. Prayagraj gets a significant boost with three new services connecting it to Udhna (Surat), and two separate services to Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. Another approved route will run between Subedarganj and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. These routes are expected to decongest existing lines and offer new travel options for millions.
Upgraded Comfort for Every Passenger
Beyond speed, the Amrit Bharat trains bring a host of features aimed at improving passenger comfort. The 22-coach trains feature aesthetically designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and mobile charging points for every passenger. The coaches have sealed gangways, which allow for smoother movement between coaches and reduce outside noise. Other modern amenities include bio-vacuum toilets, sensor-based water taps, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, and a passenger information system. Special attention has also been given to safety, with features like aerosol-based fire suppression systems in toilets and electrical cubicles.
A Key Part of Railway Modernisation
The introduction and expansion of the Amrit Bharat fleet is a crucial component of Indian Railways' broader vision for modernisation. This initiative runs parallel to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to redevelop over a thousand railway stations with modern facilities. While the Vande Bharat trains cater to the premium segment, the Amrit Bharat Express is specifically designed to uplift the travel experience for a much larger population that relies on non-AC coaches. By combining speed, comfort, and affordability, these trains represent a significant step towards democratising modern rail travel and building a more integrated national transport network.
