The Numbers Behind the Trend
While the headline figure points to a significant number, official data for the year ending September 2024 showed 77,000 visitors from India, a recovery of over 92% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The growth signals a strong rebound and solidifies India as
a key emerging market for Queensland tourism. This influx is part of a larger trend, with India becoming Australia's fifth-largest tourism market overall in 2024, with visitors spending significantly during their trips. A major driver for this travel is visiting friends and relatives, with a record 41,000 Indian visitors doing so in the year to September 2024, a 54% increase from 2019. This not only strengthens personal ties but also boosts the local economy, with Indian visitors contributing AUD$190.1 million in that period alone.
A Mix of Adventure and Relaxation
So, what is drawing so many Indians to Queensland? The answer lies in its incredible diversity. The state offers a unique blend of thrilling adventures and serene natural beauty. The Gold Coast is a major highlight, famous for its theme parks, vibrant nightlife, and stunning beaches like Surfers Paradise. For families and thrill-seekers, the gravity-defying rides and entertainment parks are a massive draw. Beyond the city buzz, Queensland is home to the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef, a natural wonder that offers unparalleled snorkelling and diving experiences. Add to that lush rainforests, encounters with unique wildlife like koalas and kangaroos, and scenic hot air balloon rides at sunrise, and it becomes clear that Queensland offers several holidays in one.
The Bollywood Connection
For decades, Bollywood has showcased Australia's stunning landscapes, acting as a powerful, informal travel brochure for millions of Indians. Queensland has frequently been in the spotlight. The action-comedy 'Singh Is Kinng' (2008) filmed extensively in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, featuring iconic locations like Brisbane City Hall and Kangaroo Point. The romantic comedy 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects' (2014) also captured the scenic beauty of Queensland for its song sequences. This on-screen exposure creates a sense of familiarity and aspiration, planting the seed for a future holiday. When fans see stars like Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan against a backdrop of pristine beaches and vibrant cityscapes, it makes the destination instantly more appealing.
Making the Journey Easier
The growing interest from India has been met with concerted efforts from tourism bodies and airlines to make the journey Down Under smoother. Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) has actively run marketing campaigns in India, partnering with major travel companies like Thomas Cook and MakeMyTrip to promote the region. Improved air connectivity is another crucial factor. While direct flights are still growing, airlines offer convenient connections through hubs in Southeast Asia, making Queensland more accessible than ever. Joint initiatives between Brisbane and the Gold Coast have specifically targeted the Indian market, aiming to convert rising demand into actual visits and further strengthen the connection between the regions.
A Welcoming Environment
For many Indian travellers, comfort and a sense of welcome are just as important as the sights. Queensland, and Australia more broadly, scores high on this front. With a significant Indian diaspora of over 90,000 in Queensland alone, there's a strong and vibrant community presence. This translates into a wide availability of Indian food and a multicultural atmosphere where visitors feel at home. Cities like Brisbane are known for being melting pots of culture, offering everything from global street food markets to fine dining. This blend of the exotic and the familiar makes for a comfortable and enriching travel experience, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits.
