The Origin of the Belief
The popular notion that houseplants can scrub the air clean largely stems from a well-known NASA study from 1989. This research was designed to find ways to clean the air in sealed environments like space stations. In the study, scientists placed common
houseplants in small, sealed chambers and pumped in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde. After 24 hours, they found that some plants were able to remove a significant percentage of these pollutants from the chamber. Plants like English ivy, peace lilies, and snake plants showed promising results, giving birth to the idea of the “air-purifying” houseplant.
From a Sealed Lab to Your Living Room
The problem is that a small, sealed chamber in a lab is vastly different from your home or office. A 2019 review of decades of research highlighted the critical flaw in applying the NASA findings to real-world settings. Our homes are not sealed; they have natural ventilation from open windows, doors, and HVAC systems that exchange air with the outside. This constant air exchange already dilutes indoor pollutants far more effectively than a few potted plants can. The effect of the plants becomes so small in a normal, ventilated room that it's practically negligible. Essentially, what works in a highly controlled, static environment doesn't scale up to the dynamic conditions of an actual living space.
The Sheer Number You Would Need
To truly replicate the air-cleaning effects seen in lab studies, the number of plants required is staggering and impractical for the average home. Researchers have calculated that you would need anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space to compete with a building's natural air exchange rate. To put that in perspective, a small 14-square-metre room would require at least 680 plants to make a meaningful impact on air quality. While some older recommendations suggested a more manageable number, like two large plants per 100 square feet, recent, more critical analysis shows this is not nearly enough to purify the air in a meaningful way. The reality is you would need to live in a dense indoor jungle to achieve significant air purification.
The Real, Proven Benefits of Plants
While they may not be the air-purifying powerhouses we once thought, indoor plants have a wealth of other scientifically-backed benefits that make them incredibly valuable. The primary advantages are psychological. This is explained by the “biophilia” hypothesis, which suggests humans have an innate need to connect with nature. Studies have repeatedly shown that interacting with indoor plants can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and suppress the body's 'fight or flight' response. Simply having plants in a room can improve mood, increase feelings of well-being, and even enhance concentration and productivity. In one study, participants who spent time potting a plant felt more relaxed and had lower blood pressure compared to those doing a computer task.
Embrace Plants for Wellness, Not Filtration
So, should you get rid of your leafy friends? Absolutely not. The key is to adjust your expectations. Instead of buying a snake plant with the hope of filtering toxins, buy it for the life, colour, and sense of calm it brings to your space. Focus on low-maintenance plants that are known to thrive indoors, like pothos, ZZ plants, or spider plants, because a healthy, thriving plant is more aesthetically pleasing and more likely to deliver those mental health boosts. The act of caring for a plant—watering it, watching it grow—can be a mindful and rewarding activity in itself. It fosters a connection to the natural world, which is especially important in our increasingly urbanised lives.
