A New Hub for Eco-Tourism
Maharashtra has approved a ₹45-crore project to establish an Eco-Nature Park at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, located along the eastern edge of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. This ambitious project, named Bhandup Bird Park, will be India's first to feature
an artificial intelligence-powered bird detection and monitoring centre. The park will be developed on a 20.09-hectare site near the Bhandup Pumping Station, a biodiversity-rich area that is already home to nearly 250 species of resident and migratory birds. To ensure minimal ecological disturbance, tourism facilities will be limited to a very small fraction of the total area, preserving the delicate mangrove ecosystems and wetlands that make the sanctuary a vital habitat. The sanctuary is a designated Ramsar site, marking it as a wetland of international importance and a crucial stop on the Central Asian Flyway for migratory birds.
How the AI 'Birdwatcher' Works
So, how exactly does AI go birdwatching? The system will use a network of smart technologies, including AI-enabled cameras and acoustic sensors, to monitor a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the park in real time. These tools are designed to automatically identify different bird species from images and sounds, a process known as bioacoustics. This eliminates the sole reliance on manual observation, allowing for continuous and non-invasive data collection around the clock. The AI will track bird movements, analyze population data, and document the area's biodiversity with a level of detail and efficiency that human teams cannot match. This constant stream of information will be managed through a centralised system, providing live updates for both researchers and visitors.
A Richer Experience for Visitors
For the everyday visitor, this technology promises to make a trip to the sanctuary more engaging and educational than ever before. The project plans include facilities like a 2.16-km mangrove nature trail, multi-level watchtowers, and viewing decks. The key difference will be the integration of the AI's findings. Interactive digital displays could show real-time sightings, helping visitors identify the birds they are seeing. This technology can turn a casual walk through the park into an immersive learning experience, offering insights into the lives of the more than 200 bird species that visit the creek annually, including the famous flocks of flamingos. The park will also feature a nature interpretation centre and lecture hall, where data from the AI can be used to educate the public about the importance of this unique urban ecosystem.

The project's most significant impact may be in the field of conservation. Traditional bird surveys are labour-intensive and provide only a snapshot in time. An AI monitoring system works 24/7, gathering vast amounts of data on population health, nesting behaviours, and migratory patterns. This allows scientists and forest officials to spot trends and threats much faster. For instance, the system could help detect the impact of pollution or habitat disturbance, enabling quicker responses to protect vulnerable species. By creating a detailed, long-term digital record of the sanctuary's birdlife, the AI provides an invaluable tool for scientific research and evidence-based conservation planning. This initiative in Thane could serve as a replicable model for other national parks and protected areas across India, demonstrating how technology can be a powerful ally in preserving biodiversity.
