Giving a Voice to the Front Page
Reddit has begun a limited experiment that introduces AI-powered narration to its traditionally text-heavy threads. In this test, select English-language posts feature a new toggle that allows users to switch from the standard “Read” view to a “Play”
mode. When activated, a synthetic voice reads the original post and a selection of its top comments aloud. Visually, the experience resembles a vertical video, with the text lighting up karaoke-style as it’s being narrated. To ensure transparency, a clear label states, “Real conversation voiced by AI,” appears on screen. The original text thread remains completely intact and accessible, allowing users to choose how they want to engage with the content.
How the New Feature Works
The feature, which began rolling out on the web on August 17 and on iOS and Android the following day, is currently in a controlled testing phase. Reddit is manually selecting which posts are eligible for narration, starting with text-only discussions to ensure quality. One of the first public examples involved an eight-year-old thread from the r/boardgames community about road trip games, demonstrating that the feature is not limited to new content. Activating the “Play” button launches a portrait-oriented video where different AI voices narrate the original post and various replies, creating a conversational feel. The core functionality of Reddit—replying, voting, and browsing—remains unchanged, with the narration serving as an optional overlay.
Why Reddit is Embracing Audio
This strategic pivot is Reddit’s answer to a major trend: the repackaging of its own content on other platforms. For years, third-party creators on TikTok and YouTube have amassed millions of views by using AI voices to narrate interesting Reddit threads, often pairing the audio with unrelated video game footage. During a recent earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman noted this phenomenon, stating the company's goal is to bring that engagement back to its own platform. By creating a native solution, Reddit aims to reclaim the audience that was consuming its content elsewhere. The move also serves a growing demand for passive consumption, allowing users to listen to threads while commuting, exercising, or doing chores—times when reading is impractical.
Accessibility and a Changing Internet
Beyond market competition, the new narration feature represents a significant step forward for accessibility on the platform. For users with visual impairments or reading difficulties, text-to-speech functionality can transform the user experience, making vast amounts of content accessible for the first time. While users have long relied on third-party browser extensions and screen readers, building the feature directly into the platform streamlines this process. A Reddit spokesperson framed the experiment as a way to understand how different formats can make the platform “more accessible and immersive.” This aligns with a broader industry push to integrate multi-modal experiences, acknowledging that users increasingly expect to be able to watch, read, or listen to content based on their context and preference.
The Road Ahead
While the initial test is limited, its implications are significant. Success could lead to a wider rollout, fundamentally changing the feel of the primarily text-based forum. However, challenges remain. Automated narration could mispronounce usernames or community-specific jargon, and the manual curation of comments for the videos means users hear a filtered version of the conversation. Reddit has not yet specified the criteria for selecting posts or whether users can opt their comments out of being narrated. The company has stated it will evaluate user feedback from this early experiment to determine how, and if, it will scale the feature in a way that feels authentic to the Reddit community.
