Understanding the New Token System
Indian Railways has introduced a token-based system at many Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters to streamline the booking of Tatkal tickets. Instead of one long, chaotic queue, passengers now need to collect a numbered token first. This token determines
your place in the line, allowing you to wait for your number to be called rather than standing for hours. The initiative, which began rolling out in zones like the West Central Railway from August 1, 2026, aims to manage crowds, improve transparency, and clamp down on touts who often dominate the queues. This change applies only to offline bookings at physical counters; the process for booking online via the IRCTC website or app remains the same.
Checklist Item 1: Perfecting Your Arrival Time
Under the new rules, timing is everything, and arriving at the right time is your first step to success. The system has specific windows for token distribution, which happen before the actual Tatkal booking opens. For AC class tickets (which open for booking at 10:00 AM), tokens are typically distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For Non-AC classes like Sleeper (where booking starts at 11:00 AM), the token window is generally from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. These timings can vary slightly by division, so it's always wise to check locally. Arriving within this specific 30-minute window is crucial, as you will not be able to join the queue without a token.
Checklist Item 2: Carrying the Correct Photo ID
A valid, original photo ID is now a non-negotiable part of the counter booking process, even for getting a token. This rule is a direct measure to curb black market sales by ensuring the person booking the ticket is a genuine passenger. Accepted forms of government-issued photo ID include an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or Passport. When you are issued a token, your name and details may be printed on it, making it strictly non-transferable. The ticket will only be issued to the person whose name is on the token and who can present the matching ID. If booking for family members, some zones may require you to carry their ID proof as well to establish the relationship.
Checklist Item 3: Respecting the Booking Window
The fundamental Tatkal booking windows have not changed. Booking for AC classes still opens sharply at 10:00 AM, and for Non-AC classes at 11:00 AM, one day in advance of the journey. The token system simply organises the queue leading up to these times. Once you have your token, you must wait for your number to be called. Counters will serve passengers strictly in the order of their token numbers. Initially, each counter might issue a limited number of tokens, for instance, 10 for AC and 15 for Non-AC classes. If any Tatkal tickets remain after all token holders have been served, the counter may open up for walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
Priority and Process at the Counter
To further prioritise genuine passengers, some railway divisions have introduced priority categories. For example, 'Category A' might be for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family, who are served first. 'Category B' could be for all other individuals, who are attended to after the priority category is cleared. When your token number is called, you'll proceed to the counter, submit your filled-out reservation form, show your photo ID again, and make the payment. Having your form completely and correctly filled out beforehand will ensure a swift transaction, benefiting both you and others in the queue.
