The Ultimate Driver's Bentley
First, it's important to understand what makes the new Supersports so special. Reviving a legendary nameplate, Bentley launched this version of the Continental GT as its most driver-focused car yet. In a radical departure, it sheds the brand's signature
all-wheel-drive system for a purer rear-wheel-drive setup and ditches the hybrid system for a potent twin-turbo V8 engine, resulting in a significant weight reduction. Limited to just 500 examples worldwide, the Supersports was already destined for legendary status as a lighter, more agile, and aggressive machine. It was designed not just for grand touring in ultimate comfort, but for delivering a visceral, engaging experience behind the wheel, making it the perfect canvas for an equally dramatic design statement.
A New Dimension in Bespoke Paint
The headline-grabbing feature is the new Design Series by Mulliner, a package available exclusively for the 500 owners of the Continental GT Supersports. While Bentley's Mulliner division has already wowed the world with its front-to-back 'Ombré' gradient paint schemes, this new offering takes the concept in a completely different direction. For the first time, Bentley is offering a side-to-side paint fade. This means the colour transitions across the width of the car, creating a stunning visual effect where the hue on the driver's side is different from the passenger's side, blending seamlessly across the bonnet, roof, and boot. It's a design choice that accentuates the car's sculpted lines and muscular stance in a way no single colour ever could, ensuring it stands out even in the most elite company.
The Artistry of the Finish
Creating such a flawless transition of colour is a feat of human artistry, not automated machinery. This is the domain of Mulliner, Bentley's in-house bespoke division, where the word 'custom' is taken to its extreme. The process for their similar gradient finishes is incredibly meticulous. For the front-to-back Ombré effect, two highly skilled technicians spend approximately 56 hours on a single car, carefully hand-spraying intermediate layers of paint to achieve a perfect, fluid transition between the two chosen shades. Because of this hands-on process, no two cars are ever truly identical. This level of craftsmanship elevates the car from a piece of engineering to a rolling work of art, a testament to the skills preserved at Bentley's 'Dream Factory' in Crewe, England.
Three Curated Personalities
To guide owners, Mulliner has launched the Design Series with three distinct and curated themes, each with its own character reflected in both the exterior and interior. The 'Dragon' theme features a dramatic fade from a vibrant Dragon Red to a deep Black Crystal. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in a corresponding two-tone of Hotspur and Beluga leather. The 'Electric' theme offers a contemporary feel, with an Electric Blue paint that fades into a dark Dark Sapphire, paired with Klein Blue and Imperial Blue hides inside. Finally, the 'Brodgar' theme provides an earthy, sophisticated option, transitioning from a light Pale Brodgar to the richer Brodgar, with a cabin finished in Camel and Beluga. Each theme creates a completely cohesive and bespoke vehicle inside and out.
The Growing Demand for Uniqueness
This innovative paint finish is a direct response to a rapidly growing trend in the ultra-luxury market: radical personalization. Bentley has noted that over 70 percent of its customers now order some form of Mulliner bespoke content, a figure that continues to rise. Today's luxury buyers don't just want a car that is rare; they want a car that is uniquely theirs. Complex paint finishes, custom interior materials, and personalized details are becoming the new standard for exclusivity. By pushing the boundaries with techniques like the side-to-side fade, Mulliner is catering to a clientele that views their automobile as a personal design statement, much like haute couture or a commissioned piece of art. It's a move away from a fixed options list and towards a collaborative creation process between the customer and the manufacturer.
