Parijat (Night-flowering Jasmine)
A beloved plant across India, Parijat, or Night-flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis), is revered for its cultural significance and intensely sweet fragrance that fills the night air. Its delicate white flowers with bright orange centres bloom
at dusk and carpet the ground in the morning, creating a beautiful daily spectacle. Though a shrub, it can be easily grown in a large pot and pruned to maintain a compact size suitable for a balcony or small terrace. It thrives in well-drained soil and needs several hours of direct sunlight to produce abundant flowers. Water it regularly, but ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging. This plant not only adds beauty and scent but also brings a touch of tradition to your home.
Mogra (Arabian Jasmine)
No list of fragrant Indian plants is complete without Mogra (Jasminum sambac). Its iconic, intoxicating scent is the stuff of legends. The pearly white, multi-petalled flowers are a classic, used in everything from garlands to perfumes. Mogra is a surprisingly resilient plant that does exceptionally well in pots. For a small space, choose a bush variety and keep it pruned after the flowering season. It loves sun, so a south or west-facing balcony is ideal. Use a well-draining potting mix and water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. Feed it with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage a continuous supply of those heavenly blooms. A single blooming plant can perfume your entire apartment.
Gardenia (Gandharaj)
Known as Gandharaj, or 'king of fragrances,' the Gardenia is pure elegance. Its creamy white, rose-like blossoms offer a sophisticated, rich perfume, while its glossy, dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop year-round. Gardenias are perfect for container gardening. They prefer bright, indirect sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade, as the harsh Indian afternoon sun can scorch their leaves. The key to a happy Gardenia is acidic soil, so use a potting mix designed for acid-loving plants. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, and fertilise regularly during the growing season to promote those gorgeous, fragrant flowers.
Sweet-Scented Geranium
While most geraniums are known for their colourful flowers, scented-leaf geraniums are grown for their aromatic foliage. When you brush against their leaves, they release a wonderful fragrance, which can range from rose and lemon to apple and mint, depending on the variety. These plants are incredibly easy to grow in small pots and are perfect for a sunny windowsill or a balcony railing box. They are hardy, drought-tolerant, and require minimal fuss. Just provide them with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil, and be careful not to overwater. They add a subtle, refreshing scent and interesting texture to your green space.
Lavender
Evoking images of serene purple fields, lavender is a world-famous aromatic plant that can be successfully grown in Indian climates with a little care. Its calming scent is a bonus. For small spaces, choose a compact English lavender variety. The absolute most important requirement for lavender is excellent drainage, as it hates having 'wet feet' and is prone to root rot in humid conditions. Growing it in a terracotta pot with a gritty, well-draining soil mix is ideal. Lavender needs at least 6-8 hours of direct, full sunlight to thrive. Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. The result is a beautiful, low-water plant that brings a touch of the Mediterranean to your home.
