Madhya Pradesh is in the midst of an ambitious aviation overhaul designed to boost tourism, trade, and regional connectivity. Under the Centre's UDAN scheme, the state is not just upgrading existing airports but also converting smaller airstrips into
full-fledged passenger facilities. Recent approvals have cleared the way for developing airports at 10 locations, with Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Mandla prioritized in the first phase. This comes on the heels of major upgrades at key airports. Gwalior's new Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Terminal was completed in a record 16 months and inaugurated in March 2024. Jabalpur also unveiled a new terminal building in March 2024, significantly increasing its passenger capacity. Meanwhile, airports in Rewa and Ujjain are also under development, with Ujjain's completion targeted before the Simhastha 2028 festival. Bhopal's Raja Bhoj Airport is also undergoing a phased expansion, aiming to become a key regional hub by 2047.
The Last-Mile Disconnect
While these state-of-the-art airports are a welcome development, they highlight a persistent issue across India: the last-mile connectivity gap. A world-class terminal is only as good as the transport links that connect it to the city center. Travelers landing at new airports often find themselves facing a jarring reality of limited, unreliable, or expensive options to complete their journey. This isn't a problem unique to Madhya Pradesh; from Navi Mumbai to Bengaluru, passengers at new airports report long waits for cabs, confusing public transport options, and a lack of clear information. The core of the issue often lies in coordination. Airport development is typically managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), a central body, while urban transport—buses, local roads, and metro rail—falls under the purview of state and local governments. This can lead to a disconnect where a multi-crore airport opens before the supporting ground infrastructure is fully in place.
Airport Spotlight: What to Expect on the Ground
For travelers flying into Madhya Pradesh, here’s a snapshot of the situation at some of the key upgraded airports. Gwalior's new terminal is approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. While it has expanded connectivity to seven cities, your options into town will primarily be pre-booked taxis or app-based services, which can be inconsistent. Jabalpur's Dumna Airport, now with the second-longest runway in the state, serves as a gateway to several national parks. It is located about 20 kilometers from the city, making a pre-arranged cab or vehicle essential, especially if you have a safari booking to catch. In Bhopal, the airport is undergoing significant expansion to separate arrival and departure flows, which will ease congestion. However, the full masterplan extends to 2047, meaning transport links will evolve over time. For the newest airports like Rewa, which became operational in late 2024, ground transport is still developing. It is located 11 kilometers from the city, and initial options are likely limited to local taxis.

The shiny new airports are a massive leap forward for Madhya Pradesh, but until ground transport catches up, smart planning is your best strategy. Before you fly, consider this checklist to avoid common frustrations. First, research your destination airport's distance from your final stop within the city and budget for the onward journey. Second, pre-book a reliable taxi service where possible, especially if arriving late at night or with a lot of luggage. Do not assume app-based services will have immediate availability. Third, check for any airport bus services. While not always well-publicized, they can be a cost-effective option, though schedules may be infrequent. Fourth, give yourself extra time. The journey from the airport to your hotel can often take longer than the flight itself, so factor this into your itinerary to avoid a rushed and stressful start to your trip.
