From Reading to Listening
Reddit has begun rolling out a feature that converts select text-based posts into short, narrated videos. For posts included in this curated test, users will see a new toggle at the top with two options: “Read” and “Play”. Choosing “Play” launches a new interface,
often in a vertical, TikTok-style format. In this mode, AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of the top-rated comments. To keep users oriented, the text is highlighted on screen, karaoke-style, as it's being spoken. The platform is also ensuring transparency by including a disclaimer that labels the content as a “Real conversation voiced by AI”.
A Limited, Curated Rollout
This isn't a free-for-all just yet. The experiment is currently limited to a handful of manually selected, English-language posts within specific subreddits. The feature began appearing for web users on August 17, with the iOS and Android app rollout following a day later. Reddit has been clear that this is an early and limited test. The company is hand-picking the posts, which can range from recent discussions to popular threads from years ago, like an eight-year-old post in the r/boardgames community. The stated goal is to gather feedback and understand if users find these new audio-visual formats useful and engaging before considering a wider, more automated rollout.
The Strategy Behind the Sound
Reddit's move into AI narration is a direct response to a content trend that has flourished on other platforms. For years, creators on YouTube and TikTok have been repurposing Reddit’s text-heavy content into narrated videos, often paired with unrelated gameplay footage, attracting millions of views. By creating its own native playback feature, Reddit is aiming to reclaim that engagement and keep users on its own platform. CEO Steve Huffman explicitly mentioned this during a recent earnings call, noting that a “spoken version of Reddit can be really engaging.” The company also frames the feature as a win for accessibility and convenience, allowing users to consume content while exercising, commuting, or running errands when reading isn't practical.
More Than Just a Voice
While the core function is text-to-speech, the implications are much broader. This experiment is part of a larger push by Reddit to modernize its platform and integrate more video and AI features. In June, the company introduced video comments, which it says already account for a significant portion of new video posts. The AI playback feature also uses multiple voices to distinguish between the original poster and different commenters, adding a layer of conversational realism. However, the original text threads remain completely unchanged, ensuring that the traditional reading experience isn't compromised. This hybrid approach allows Reddit to experiment with new formats without alienating its massive, text-loving user base.
The Bigger Picture: AI and the Future of Community
This experiment highlights a fundamental shift in how social media platforms view their own content. By turning user-generated text into a new form of media, Reddit is unlocking more value from its archives. The move is not just about competing with TikTok, but also about making the platform more accessible and immersive. It follows other AI-powered enhancements on the platform, including tools for moderators and improvements to its search function. However, questions remain about how the system will handle nuances like sarcasm, community-specific slang, or mispronunciations. The success of this early test will depend on whether the AI can capture the authentic feel of Reddit conversations, a challenge the company seems keen to tackle.
