What is the Vandarshan Programme?
The Vandarshan initiative is a new series of all-inclusive, rail-based wildlife tourism packages designed to streamline travel to Maharashtra's famed tiger habitats. Unveiled on International Tiger Day, the programme is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) signed between IRCTC's West Zone and the state's Forest Department. The core idea is to remove the usual hassles of planning a wildlife trip. Previously, a tourist had to separately book train tickets, find accommodation near the reserve, and navigate the often-difficult process of securing safari permits, which sell out quickly. Vandarshan combines all these elements into a single booking, making the entire experience seamless for travellers.
An All-Inclusive Wildlife Adventure
The main appeal of the Vandarshan packages is their all-inclusive nature. A single booking covers confirmed train tickets, accommodation in hotels, all local transport between stations, hotels, and safari gates, and, most importantly, guaranteed wildlife safari permits. This bundling of services is a game-changer for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and families who were often deterred by the logistical complexities. The initial tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries, departing from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on the Vidarbha Express. IRCTC has curated five distinct itineraries to cater to different types of travellers, from casual tourists to serious birdwatchers and photographers.
Which Protected Areas Can You Visit?
The programme provides access to six key protected areas in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, a landscape renowned for its rich biodiversity. This includes four of the state's six designated tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition to these, the packages also cover two important wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. While the headline focuses on tiger reserves, the inclusion of these sanctuaries expands the scope of wildlife experiences available. Two of Maharashtra's tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of the initial launch.
A Boost for Eco-Tourism and Conservation
Officials believe this initiative will do more than just simplify travel; it aims to promote responsible and sustainable tourism. By creating organised and regulated channels for tourism, the partnership hopes to increase footfall in a controlled manner, generate livelihood opportunities for local communities living around the reserves, and strengthen public awareness about wildlife conservation. The collaboration is part of a broader push by the Maharashtra government to develop integrated tourism circuits across the state, focusing on its natural and cultural heritage. The Vandarshan programme aligns with the goal of making eco-tourism more accessible while ensuring that it supports the long-term protection of these vital ecosystems.
How to Book Your Safari
Booking for the Vandarshan packages is handled directly through IRCTC's official tourism portal, irctctourism.com. This single point of contact is designed for user convenience, allowing travellers to view the different itineraries and select a package that suits their interests and schedule. While the assured safari permit is a major draw, prospective travellers should clarify key details before booking. Experts suggest asking IRCTC about the number of safaris included, whether they are in the highly sought-after core zones or the buffer zones, which entry gate will be used, and the specific hotel for the stay, as these factors significantly shape the wildlife experience. The core zones of the parks typically reopen for tourism on October 1 after the monsoon season, which is when many travellers will look to book these new packages.
