Recent patent filings from Mercedes-Benz describe a control system for an off-road vehicle that enables it to enter a body of water, remain afloat, and climb back to shore without assistance. The system cleverly avoids the need for propellers by utilizing
the vehicle's existing hardware. At its core, the concept relies on removable flotation devices, likely made of foam or inflatable materials, that are installed in the wheel arches. An onboard computer would manage the buoyancy at each corner to keep the vehicle stable against currents or uneven loads. Once floating, the vehicle would use its own wheels for propulsion. The system could independently control the torque and rotation of each wheel, effectively using the tires as paddles to move and steer through the water. The patent even describes how the adaptive suspension could adjust the depth of the wheels to act like rudders. When not in use, the inflatable modules could be stored in the spare tire area and filled by an onboard compressor.

With the recent launch of the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology, Mercedes has already proven its commitment to evolving its most legendary off-roader for a new era. The electric G-Class is equipped with four individually controlled electric motors, a rugged ladder-frame chassis, and advanced suspension—the exact building blocks needed for the amphibious system to work. This quad-motor setup allows for precise torque vectoring, which would be essential for controlling the vehicle in water. The move from a concept vehicle, the EQG, to a production model demonstrates Mercedes' intent to push the boundaries of what an electric 4x4 can do, and adding amphibious capabilities would be a dramatic next step.
