Delhi is set to offer residents and tourists a brand-new way to experience the city with the launch of the Namo Yamuna River Safari. This river cruise promises a fresh perspective on the capital's landscape. Here’s what you need to know.
What is the Namo Yamuna River Safari?
The Namo Yamuna
River Safari is Delhi's first dedicated river cruise service, designed to promote tourism and offer a unique recreational activity. Trial runs for the service began in late October 2026, with an official public launch planned ahead of the Chhath Puja festival. This initiative is part of a larger government project to develop the Yamuna riverfront into a vibrant leisure corridor. The project is a collaboration between several government bodies, including the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and various Delhi government departments, to develop a stretch of what is officially known as National Waterway 110.
The Route and Journey Details
The cruise operates on a specific stretch of the Yamuna, running between Sonia Vihar in Delhi and Jagatpur. This route covers a distance of approximately five to six kilometres. A complete round trip on the safari is expected to take around 40 minutes, providing passengers with a peaceful and scenic journey on the water, away from the city's hustle and bustle. The service aims to run a minimum of four trips per day, offering multiple opportunities for people to take the ride.
Ticket Price and Booking
The fare for the Namo Yamuna River Safari has been fixed at ₹500 per person. Some reports also mention a smaller premises entry fee of ₹50 in addition to the cruise ticket. Officials have indicated that tickets will be made available for purchase online through the official Delhi Tourism website, ensuring a convenient booking process for visitors.
The Onboard Experience and Facilities
The boats used for the safari are modern, air-conditioned vessels designed for comfort and safety. Each boat has a maximum capacity of 30 passengers per trip. These vessels are required to be less than two years old and are described as eco friendly electric solar hybrids or catamaran style boats. For passenger convenience and environmental protection, the boats are equipped with inboard bio toilets that ensure zero waste discharge into the river. Safety is also a priority, with all vessels carrying safety jackets and featuring an announcement system for passengers.
A New Recreational Hub for Delhi
The river safari is more than just a boat ride; it is the cornerstone of a larger plan to create a new recreational destination for families. Officials have expressed hopes that the area will become a popular 'picnic spot'. Plans are underway to enhance the riverfront experience near the cruise route with additional attractions. These include a musical fountain that will tell the story of the Yamuna, a dedicated food park, a kids' zone for children to play, and even the introduction of water sports. This integrated development aims to provide a complete day out experience for Delhiites and tourists alike, with a focus on enjoying the natural environment of the river in a clean and sustainable manner.
