Which Mustang Models Are Affected?
The recall focuses on the latest generation of the iconic muscle car. In total, 67,842 vehicles are included. This breaks down into 67,553 units of the standard 2024-2026 Ford Mustang and 289 units of the ultra-high-performance 2025-2026 Ford Mustang GTD.
The affected vehicles were manufactured at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan between late 2024 and early 2026. If you own a Mustang from this generation, it is crucial to pay attention to this notice. The issue spans the entire range, from the entry-level EcoBoost to the track-focused GTD.
The Glitch: A Cold Weather Quirk
The problem specifically surfaces in cold conditions. When the temperature drops to freezing (0° Celsius / 32° Fahrenheit) or below, the wiper system can malfunction. Drivers may find that they lose control over the wiper speed, with the wipers operating only on the fastest setting. Additionally, the windshield washer system may stop working entirely in these cold temperatures. While a fast-moving wiper might seem better than none, the inability to adjust the speed for light rain or mist can be highly distracting and obscure vision, creating a significant safety risk. The complete failure of the washer system further compounds the potential danger in wintry conditions.
The Technical Cause: A Tiny Chip Error
The root of the problem is not a mechanical failure but a software mismatch on a tiny piece of hardware. According to Ford's report to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue lies with a semiconductor chip on the wiper motor's circuit board. The supplier, Valeo, mistakenly used the wrong programming equipment. A 16-kilobyte chip was programmed with a mismatched 32-kilobyte algorithm. This error causes the wiper motor to lose communication with the car's main steering column control module in cold weather, leading to the default high-speed operation. Ford has identified at least 35 warranty claims related to this specific communication loss.
What Should Owners in India Do?
The recall has been formally announced in the United States. While Ford India has scaled back its sales operations, it continues to provide service support for its previously sold vehicles, including the imported Mustang. Historically, the Mustang models sold in India have been Completely Built-Up (CBU) units sourced from the same Flat Rock plant in Michigan where the affected cars are built. Therefore, it is highly likely that some models sold in India could be impacted by this global issue. Owners of 2024 or newer Mustangs in India are strongly advised to proactively contact their nearest authorised Ford service centre. Provide them with your car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and inquire about the applicability of this wiper motor recall (Ford's internal recall number is 26C32). Do not wait for a formal announcement, as service bulletins for imported models can sometimes have different communication timelines.
The Fix and the Timeline
Ford has a solution, but owners may need to be patient. The fix involves dealers inspecting the front wiper motor assembly. If it is found to be one of the faulty units, it will be replaced entirely free of charge with a new motor that has a properly configured chip. In the U.S., Ford began sending initial notification letters to owners in mid-July 2026 to inform them of the risk. However, the automaker has stated that the necessary replacement parts will not be widely available until early 2027, with a second round of letters to be sent then, scheduling the actual repair. This long wait means owners, particularly those in colder climates, will need to be mindful of the issue through the upcoming winter.
