daily are feeling the most heat. This phenomenon, known as the proximity paradox, stems from their unique vantage point. Unlike those with less exposure, these workers see firsthand how rapidly AI capabilities are advancing, leading them to question the long-term security of their own roles. They are not just reading headlines about AI; they are training their potential replacements.
Who Feels the Heat Most?
The anxiety isn't spread evenly. A recent survey of India-based professionals from the networking platform Blind highlighted this trend. It found that 66% of employees in AI and machine learning roles expect layoffs in their teams within the next six months. This placed them nearly on par with sales and marketing staff (68%), traditionally seen as more vulnerable. The roles most affected are often white-collar knowledge workers—analysts, marketers, designers, and even some coders—whose tasks involve processing information, a core strength of generative AI. Interestingly, the same survey noted that engineers and data teams reported lower levels of concern, suggesting that those in highly technical or foundational roles still feel a degree of safety.
From Discomfort to Disengagement
This heightened anxiety is more than just a fleeting concern; it has tangible impacts on the workplace. When employees see AI as a threat to their stability, it can lead to burnout, reduced productivity, and 'quiet disengagement'. Research shows that workers anxious about AI are nearly twice as likely to feel that putting in extra effort is pointless. This sentiment is particularly strong in India, where the IT and Business Process Management (BPM) sectors employ over 5.4 million people. With companies like TCS and Infosys slowing campus hiring and restructuring roles, the anxiety is palpable among a generation of graduates who once saw IT as a guaranteed path to the middle class.
A Leadership Challenge
Many organisations are adopting AI to boost efficiency and productivity, not explicitly to cut headcount. However, this message is often lost in translation. A significant trust gap exists, with many employees feeling their leaders are not being transparent about their AI strategy. This uncertainty fuels a cycle of fear. Managers find themselves caught in the middle, often fielding questions about job security without clear answers from the top. The solution, according to experts, is not to slow down AI adoption but to manage the human side of the transition more effectively. This involves clear, consistent communication, equipping managers with the right information, and creating a culture of psychological safety where employees can voice concerns without fear.
Turning Anxiety into an Advantage
The path forward lies in shifting the narrative from replacement to augmentation. Instead of leaving employees to guess about the future, companies must invest heavily in reskilling and creating clear pathways for career development in an AI-driven world. This means focusing on skills that AI cannot replicate: critical thinking, complex judgment, creativity, and empathy. For employees, it means proactively assessing their own skills, speaking up about their concerns, and embracing a mindset of continuous learning. The goal for both sides is to treat AI not as an impending threat, but as a co-pilot that can handle routine tasks, freeing up human workers to focus on higher-value work that drives innovation and growth.
