Under normal conditions, night provides a crucial period of recovery from daytime heat. As the sun sets and temperatures drop, the human body has a chance to shed the heat it has absorbed. This cooling process is essential for regulating our core body temperature and allowing
our systems, especially the cardiovascular system, to rest and repair. Cooler nights allow for restorative sleep, a biological necessity that is itself closely tied to temperature regulation. Our bodies are designed to slightly lower their core temperature to initiate and maintain sleep. This nightly respite is not a luxury; it is a fundamental part of how we cope with environmental heat stress.
The Compounding Stress of Relentless Heat
During a prolonged heat wave with high overnight temperatures, this vital recovery period vanishes. When the air does not cool down sufficiently, the body continues to struggle to release accumulated heat. This puts sustained strain on the heart, which has to pump harder to send blood to the skin to try and cool down. Health experts warn this cumulative stress is particularly dangerous because the ill effects are not always immediate. Instead of recovering, the body's core temperature can remain elevated, leading to a cascade of health issues over several days, including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and the exacerbation of pre-existing conditions like heart and kidney disease. Studies have shown a clear link between high minimum (nighttime) temperatures and increased mortality during heat waves.
A Magnified Threat for Vulnerable Groups
While everyone is affected, certain populations are far more vulnerable to the dangers of warm nights. The elderly are particularly at risk, as their bodies are less efficient at thermoregulation. Young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions like diabetes or respiratory illnesses also face heightened danger. For many in India, especially those in lower-income communities or who work outdoors, the risks are compounded. Labourers who spend their days in the sun have no chance to recover if their homes are not equipped with adequate cooling, turning their resting hours into a period of continued physiological stress. This silent threat can turn a heat wave from a period of discomfort into a deadly event for the most susceptible among us.
Why Cities Become Concrete Ovens at Night
This phenomenon is made significantly worse in urban areas due to the "urban heat island" effect. Materials like concrete, asphalt, and dark roofing absorb vast amounts of solar radiation during the day and release it slowly throughout the night. This can make cities several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas, with the difference being most pronounced after sunset. Dense clusters of buildings trap air and block wind, further preventing cooling. For the millions living in India's rapidly growing cities, this means the built environment itself becomes a source of danger, effectively transforming neighbourhoods into 'brick ovens' that offer no relief from the oppressive heat.
A New Normal We Must Prepare For
The increasing frequency of dangerously warm nights is not a random occurrence; it is a direct consequence of a warming climate. Overnight low temperatures are rising even faster than daytime highs in many regions, fundamentally changing the nature of heat waves. What was once a rare event is becoming a regular feature of summer in many parts of the world, including across the Indian subcontinent. This shift requires a change in our understanding and public health response. Heat action plans and early warning systems are increasingly incorporating nighttime temperature thresholds, recognizing that the daily minimum temperature is a critical factor in heat-related illness and death.
