Delhi is set to transform the Yamuna into a new recreational hub with the introduction of a river cruise service. This initiative promises a fresh perspective of the city's landmarks from the water. Here are the key details you need to know.
Vessel Capacity and Design
The central
point of interest for many is the passenger capacity of the new cruise vessels. Each boat, part of the 'Namo Yamuna River Safari', is designed to accommodate a maximum of 30 passengers per trip. Some initial reports had mentioned a potential for up to 40 seats, but the current operational plan specifies a 30-passenger limit to ensure comfort and safety. These vessels are not just standard boats; they are eco-friendly electric or solar-hybrid catamarans. This focus on green technology is a core part of the project's vision, aiming to provide a sustainable tourism experience without harming the river's ecosystem. The boats are modern, with some reports mentioning they will be air-conditioned and built under the 'Make in India' initiative.
The Route and Journey Experience
The cruise will navigate a scenic stretch of the Yamuna upstream of the Wazirabad barrage. The designated route runs between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering a distance of approximately five to six kilometres. A complete round trip is expected to take about 40 to 45 minutes, offering a brief but unique escape from the city's hustle. Passengers will have the opportunity to see a different side of Delhi, with panoramic views of ghats, temples, and the surrounding green belts. The service is planned to operate at least four trips daily. Trial runs for the service began in late October 2026, with an official launch anticipated ahead of the Chhath Mahaparv in November.
Onboard Amenities and Safety
Passenger comfort and safety are key priorities for the new service. The boats are equipped with essential safety features, including life jackets for all passengers and a public announcement system for information and emergencies. A significant feature is the inclusion of onboard bio-toilets, which are designed to prevent any waste discharge into the river, aligning with the project's environmental goals. While the primary attraction is the view, there are plans to enhance the experience with other facilities. The broader development around the jetties is expected to include a restaurant, food park, and even a musical fountain, turning the area into a complete family picnic destination.
The Vision for Yamuna Tourism
The Yamuna cruise is more than just a boat ride; it is part of a larger strategic vision to develop river-based tourism in the national capital. The project is a collaborative effort between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and several Delhi government agencies, including the tourism and irrigation departments. An agreement was signed in March 2025 to officially kickstart the development of this tourism corridor on the Yamuna, which is designated as National Waterway 110 (NW-110). Officials have stated the initiative aims to give a new dimension to tourism in Delhi, create new employment opportunities, and strengthen the cultural and emotional connection residents have with the Yamuna.
Ticketing and Accessibility
For those looking to experience the cruise, the proposed fare for a complete trip has been set at Rs 500 per person. In addition, there may be a nominal entry fee of Rs 50 for the premises where the jetties are located. While the final launch date is yet to be formally announced, officials are aiming for early November 2026. It is expected that tickets will be made available for purchase online through the official Delhi Tourism website, offering a convenient booking process for both residents and tourists. The starting point at Sonia Vihar is accessible, and the development includes proper jetties and boarding zones to ensure a smooth experience for all visitors.
