A New 'Eye in the Sky'
Most Earth observation satellites circle the planet in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), just a few hundred kilometres up. They capture high-resolution images but can only see a specific location for a few minutes during each pass. EOS-05 is different. It operates
from a geosynchronous orbit, a staggering 36,000 kilometres away. At this altitude, its orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. This allows it to 'hover' over the Indian subcontinent, providing a constant, uninterrupted view of a vast region. Think of it as moving from occasional snapshots to a persistent, live video feed of the entire country and its surroundings.
What Makes It a Game-Changer?
The key advantage of EOS-05 is its ability to provide near real-time imagery. Where LEO satellites might revisit a location once every few days, EOS-05 can image a selected area of interest as frequently as every five minutes and the entire Indian landmass every half hour. This capability is crucial for tracking rapidly developing situations. For disaster management agencies, it means the ability to monitor the progression of cyclones, floods, and forest fires in real-time, enabling faster and more effective response. For agriculture, it offers a way to monitor crop health and water resources over large areas with unprecedented frequency, helping to improve yields and manage resources efficiently.
The Strategic Advantage
Beyond its civilian applications, EOS-05 provides a significant strategic and military advantage. The satellite's ability to maintain a constant watch over India's land and maritime borders is a game-changer for national security. While officials note it is not a dedicated "spy satellite," its persistent monitoring capabilities strengthen surveillance and situational awareness in sensitive areas. Unlike lower-orbit satellites whose paths can be tracked, EOS-05 provides a continuous and less predictable overhead presence, bolstering the nation’s defence and intelligence-gathering capabilities without being solely for military use. This persistent stare is invaluable for monitoring troop movements, infrastructure development, and other activities in neighbouring regions.
The Road to Success Was Not Easy
The successful launch of EOS-05 is a story of perseverance for ISRO. This mission is essentially the second attempt after a heartbreaking failure in August 2021. Its predecessor, designated EOS-03 (or GISAT-1), was lost when its GSLV-F10 rocket malfunctioned. The cryogenic upper stage of the rocket failed to ignite, preventing the satellite from reaching orbit. It has taken five years to replace the lost satellite, a period during which ISRO engineers worked to diagnose the issue and ensure the new mission's success. The successful launch of EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket not only redeems that earlier failure but also restores confidence in the GSLV launch vehicle.
