What Is The Gaganyaan Mission?
Gaganyaan, which translates from Sanskrit as "Sky Craft," is India's ambitious human spaceflight programme. Spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the ultimate objective is to demonstrate the capability of sending a crew of up to three
astronauts to an orbit of 400 kilometres for a three-day mission and bringing them back safely to Earth. A successful mission will make India only the fourth country in the world—after the United States, Russia, and China—to have an independent human spaceflight capability. This programme isn't just about prestige; it's a strategic initiative to boost industry, create jobs, spur technological innovation, and inspire a new generation of scientists.
The Crucial First Step: An Uncrewed Flight
Before putting astronauts at risk, ISRO will conduct a series of rigorous tests. The first of these is a full-scale uncrewed mission, G1, targeted for the latter half of 2026. This flight is the ultimate dress rehearsal. It will test every critical system in a real-world space environment, from the performance of the human-rated LVM3 rocket to the crew module's life support systems. A key focus will be on the module's atmospheric re-entry and the precision of its splashdown and recovery operations in the Indian Ocean, which will be supported by the Indian Navy. Astronaut safety is the absolute priority, and this uncrewed mission is designed to validate all systems before humans are on board.
Meet Vyommitra: The Humanoid 'Friend In Space'
A key passenger on the first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight will be Vyommitra, a highly advanced humanoid robot. The name is a combination of the Sanskrit words 'Vyoma' (space) and 'Mitra' (friend). Developed by ISRO, Vyommitra is a half-humanoid without legs, designed to operate within the spacecraft's cabin. Its mission is to simulate human functions, operate switch panels, monitor the cabin environment, and communicate with the ground control team. Vyommitra will be fitted with sensors to measure how the flight conditions, like vibration and acceleration, would affect a human body, providing invaluable data to ensure the environment is safe for the eventual crew. This represents a significant shift towards using robotics for testing instead of animals.
The 'Vyommitra's' And Their Rigorous Training
While technology is at the forefront, the human element is central to Gaganyaan. The first group of astronaut-designates are four highly experienced test pilots from the Indian Air Force: Group Captains Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla. They have undergone an extremely stringent selection process and extensive training. This included a 13-month course in Russia at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, where they were prepared for the physical and psychological rigours of space travel, including G-force simulations and survival training for various landing scenarios. Their training continues in India, focusing on the specific systems of the Gaganyaan module.

The 2026 uncrewed launch is more than just a test flight; it's a pivotal moment in India's journey as a space power. A successful mission will validate years of research and development, paving the way for the first crewed flight, which is anticipated in 2027. The Gaganyaan programme is a cornerstone of India's long-term space exploration strategy, which includes establishing its own space station, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, by 2035 and eventually sending an Indian to the Moon by 2040.
