The Crime That Started It All
The Salgaonkar family's nightmare began when Anju, Vijay's elder daughter, was secretly filmed by Sam, the son of the Inspector General of Police, Meera Deshmukh. During a confrontation where Sam tried to blackmail Anju, a struggle ensued, and he was accidentally
killed. Faced with an impossible situation, Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) decides not to go to the police but to protect his family at all costs. He buries Sam's body in his garden, disposes of the boy's car, and begins to construct the most audacious alibi in cinematic history, inspired entirely by his love for films.
The Unbreakable Alibi of October 2nd
To counter the police investigation led by a relentless Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), Vijay creates a foolproof narrative. He takes his family on a trip to Panjim on October 2nd and 3rd, the days following Sam's disappearance. They attend a religious sermon, watch a movie, and eat at a restaurant. He meticulously collects receipts and tickets. More importantly, he repeatedly mentions his trip to various people, drilling the dates into their subconscious. When questioned, the family sticks to the same story, and every witness corroborates their presence in Panjim. The police are left with no body and a rock-solid alibi. In a masterstroke, Vijay moves Sam's body from his garden and buries it under the foundation of a new police station being built nearby, a place no one would ever think to look.
Seven Years Later: The Ghost Returns
Drishyam 2 picks up seven years later. Vijay is now a successful theatre owner, but his family lives in fear. The case is reopened when a new, sharp IG, Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna), takes charge. An undercover police couple befriends Vijay's wife, Nandini (Shriya Saran), who inadvertently lets slip crucial details. Worse, a witness who saw Vijay at the police station construction site seven years ago is released from prison and informs the police. The authorities excavate the station floor and discover skeletal remains, leading to the Salgaonkar family's arrest.
The Ultimate Checkmate
Cornered and with his family under immense pressure, Vijay confesses to the crime. It seems the game is finally over. But this is Vijay Salgaonkar. The confession is just another move in his long game. It is revealed in court that Vijay's confession perfectly matches the plot of a novel titled 'Drishyam', written by a screenwriter he had been working with. The police are accused of forcing a confession based on the book. Then comes the final twist: a DNA test proves the skeleton found at the police station is not Sam's. For seven years, Vijay had planned for this day. He had found the body of another young man who died of similar injuries, preserved the skeleton, and planted it at the construction site, anticipating the police would one day dig there. He had also anonymously sent Sam's real remains to his parents for their final rites, offering them a twisted form of closure.
The Final Chapter: Drishyam 3
With Vijay once again outsmarting the entire police force, the stage is set for a grand finale. The makers have announced Drishyam 3: The Conclusion, which is slated for release on October 2, 2026. Excitement is high, with advance bookings already showing massive interest. Interestingly, Ajay Devgn has revealed that the Hindi version will deviate completely from the Malayalam original's storyline, promising fresh twists. He even sought the approval of Mohanlal, the star of the original series, before proceeding with the new script. The final film will see the return of the original cast, including Tabu, alongside new additions like Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj. The story of the man who would do anything to protect his family is heading towards its final, thrilling conclusion.
