Choosing the Wrong Breakfast
Not all breakfasts are created equal. A meal high in refined carbohydrates and sugar, like a sweet pastry, sugary cereal, or just toast with jam, can send your blood sugar soaring. One study from the University of Bath found that drinking strong black coffee before eating breakfast increased the blood glucose response to that meal by about 50%. Caffeine stimulates the release of stress hormones like cortisol, which can signal the liver to release more glucose. To mitigate this, try eating your breakfast first or at least having a small, protein-rich snack with your morning brew.
Waking Up After a Poor Night's Sleep
The connection between sleep and metabolic health is powerful. Even a single night of insufficient sleep can make it harder for your body to use insulin effectively, a state known as insulin resistance. Chronic sleep deprivation is strongly linked to an increased risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. When you are dehydrated, the amount of water in your bloodstream decreases. This means the glucose in your blood becomes more concentrated, leading to higher blood sugar readings. High blood sugar can also cause the body to lose more fluid through increased urination, creating a vicious cycle. By rehydrating first thing in the morning, you help dilute blood glucose and support your kidneys in flushing out any excess sugar.
