The Journey Begins at Home
Imagine your airport experience starting with a wake-up call, followed by a team arriving at your doorstep to check you in and collect your luggage. This isn't a scene from a futuristic film; it's a planned new service at Bengaluru Airport. As an expansion
of its existing 'Care by BLR' programme, the airport is working on a door-to-door travel service. The proposal includes a chauffeur-driven vehicle to take you to the terminal, where support staff will guide you through the remaining formalities right up to the gate. This end-to-end service aims to eliminate the stress of handling luggage and navigating check-in, which could be especially beneficial for families and those with extra bags. While a launch date and pricing are not yet public, the plan signals a major shift in passenger care, extending the airport's hospitality well beyond its physical boundaries.
Seamless Digital Travel Inside the Terminal
Once at the airport, the push for convenience continues with technology. BLR Airport is enhancing its use of the DigiYatra platform, which facilitates a paperless and contactless journey using facial recognition. This biometric system is being trialed for international passengers, allowing them to move from check-in and baggage drop to security screening without needing to show physical documents at every point. The goal is to create a truly seamless flow using self-sovereign identity technology, reducing queues and contact points. Further technological upgrades are also underway for air traffic management, including a new Point Merge System to streamline flight arrivals and reduce delays, ensuring that the entire airport ecosystem runs more efficiently. These behind-the-scenes improvements are designed to translate into a smoother, faster experience for every passenger.
The Terminal 2 'Garden' Experience
All international flights now operate from the acclaimed Terminal 2, known as the 'Terminal in a Garden'. This isn't just a new building; it's a complete reimagining of the airport environment. Designed to reflect Bengaluru's green heritage, T2 integrates lush indoor plantings, natural light, and even a 'forest belt' that passengers cross via open-air bridges to get to their gates. But it’s not just about aesthetics. The terminal is equipped with modern passenger amenities, including expansive lounge areas like the 080 International Lounge, which offers spa services and nap areas. The immigration process is streamlined with over 30 counters and e-gates. An extensive selection of retail and dining options, from South Indian coffee to craft beer, ensures that waiting for a flight is a comfortable and engaging experience.
Enhanced Connectivity and Future Growth
As passenger numbers grow, BLR is focused on making movement around the airport precinct easier. For transfers between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, a free shuttle bus service is currently available. Looking ahead, the airport has initiated the bidding process for an Automated People Mover (APM), a driverless rail system that will offer a fast and predictable way to travel between the terminals. This would be the first of its kind in India and a significant upgrade from the current bus system. This focus on connectivity is part of a broader vision to develop the airport into a global hub on par with international giants like Dubai and Singapore, serving as a key transit point for passengers from across the country. With plans for new hotels, a business park, and expanded cargo facilities, the airport is evolving into a comprehensive 'airport city'.
