More Than Just a Number
The increase in Indian tourists is a significant bright spot in Queensland's post-pandemic tourism recovery. In the year ending September 2024, the state welcomed 77,000 visitors from India, a figure that is rapidly approaching pre-COVID levels. This
influx is part of a larger national trend that has seen India become one of Australia's fastest-growing and most valuable tourism markets, with Indian travellers recognised for their high expenditure. For Queensland, this means a major boost to the local economy, with the Indian market contributing significantly to the state's goal of reaching a $44 billion visitor economy by 2032.
The Direct Connection
A key catalyst for this growth is improved aviation connectivity. For years, travel between India and Queensland required inconvenient layovers. However, the push for direct flights has been a major focus for both airlines and tourism bodies. Increased services from carriers like Air India have drastically reduced travel time and enhanced convenience, making the journey far more appealing for families and business travellers alike. Brisbane and the Gold Coast have united in their efforts, even appointing market representatives in India to strengthen the case for more direct routes, recognising that seamless travel is crucial for sustained growth.
Sun, City, and Epic Adventures
Queensland's diverse offerings are a perfect match for the Indian travel palate. The Gold Coast remains a massive drawcard, especially for families, with its world-famous theme parks and stunning beaches. In 2024, the Gold Coast saw a staggering 68% rise in visitors from India year-over-year. Beyond the coast, the vibrant city life of Brisbane, which has welcomed record numbers of Indian visitors, serves as a gateway to iconic natural wonders. Experiences like seeing the Great Barrier Reef, cuddling a koala, and exploring ancient rainforests consistently rank as top attractions for Indian tourists, who value world-class nature and unique wildlife encounters.
A Calculated and Cultural Welcome
This tourism boom is no accident. Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) has made India a priority market, rolling out targeted marketing campaigns and forming strategic partnerships to elevate the state's profile. These efforts acknowledge what Indian travellers look for: safety, value for money, and a wide range of activities suitable for all ages. There is also a strong emphasis on visiting friends and relatives (VFR), as a large Indian diaspora in Australia provides a steady foundation for travel. Furthermore, the state's well-developed tourism infrastructure and a growing number of culinary options that cater to Indian tastes ensure a welcoming and comfortable experience.
