The Algarve's golden coastline, carved with spectacular sea caves, is a bucket-list sight. A kayak offers the most intimate way to explore them, but a memorable trip requires planning. Here’s what every visitor needs to know before paddling out.
Understanding the New Rules
The single
most important thing to know is that rules for visiting the most famous cave, Benagil, have changed. As of 2024, it is forbidden to swim into the cave or to rent a kayak for a self-guided tour of the area. Furthermore, landing on the small beach inside the cave is now prohibited for everyone, including guided tours. All visits inside the cave must be with a licensed, guided tour. These regulations were put in place for safety reasons and to manage the high volume of visitors. The number of kayaks and boats allowed inside at any one time is now limited, with visits typically lasting just a few minutes.
Kayak vs. Boat Tour: Making the Choice
Deciding between a kayak and a motorized boat tour depends on your priority. A boat tour is faster, covers more coastline, and is a better option for families with young children, those with limited mobility, or anyone preferring a more relaxed experience. However, boats cannot land passengers and your view of the caves will be from the water. A guided kayak tour allows for a more personal, water-level experience. Kayaks can often slip into smaller grottos and sea caves that larger boats cannot access. While you can no longer get out onto the sand at Benagil, the immersive experience of paddling through the caves is something many visitors prefer. Keep in mind that kayaking requires a moderate level of fitness and comfort on the water.
The Best Time to Go
Timing is everything in the Algarve. The main kayaking season runs from spring through autumn, with May, June, and September often considered the sweet spot, offering pleasant weather and fewer crowds than the peak months of July and August. More important than the season, however, is the time of day. To avoid the biggest crowds, book the earliest morning tour available, ideally between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM. At this time, the sea is often calmer, the light is golden for photography, and the queue of boats and kayaks is minimal. An evening tour is another good option for thinner crowds. Always check the sea conditions, as tours can be cancelled due to high swell or strong winds.
Choosing a Reputable Tour Operator
Since guided tours are now mandatory for entering the Benagil area by kayak, selecting a good operator is key. Look for companies with strong safety records, positive reviews, and certified guides. Reputable operators will provide a safety briefing, all necessary equipment including a life jacket, and will adhere to maritime safety laws, such as cancelling trips when wave heights are unsafe. Tours typically last around two hours and explore not only the main Benagil Cave but also other beautiful spots along the coast, like the stunning Praia da Marinha. Check the group size; a smaller group often makes for a better, more manageable experience.
What to Bring for Your Excursion
Packing smart will make your trip more comfortable. Dress for the water temperature, not just the air temperature. A swimsuit is a good base, with a quick drying synthetic shirt for sun protection. Essentials include reef safe sunscreen, a hat with a strap, and sunglasses. You will be provided with a life jacket which is mandatory. Most tours offer a waterproof dry bag for small personal items like your phone and keys but it is a good idea to confirm this. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. For footwear choose water shoes or secure sandals that won't fall off flip flops are not recommended.
