The Bigger Picture: Job Creation Outpaces Losses
Recent analysis reveals that for every job impacted by AI in India, approximately 2.6 new AI-related roles are being created. A report from Nomura, which analyzed employment trends until August 2026, found that India saw around 83,100 AI-related hires
against 31,921 job cuts linked to the technology. This positions India as a crucial market—or "ground zero," as Nomura economists described it—for understanding AI's real-world effect on employment. The growth is substantial, with the nation's AI talent pool projected to nearly double from around 650,000 professionals to over 1.25 million by 2027. This net positive impact, however, comes with a critical caveat: the new roles require a different, more specialized skill set than the ones being replaced.
The Skills Fueling the Boom
The demand is not for generic AI knowledge but for specific, high-value competencies. Generative AI skills, particularly those involving Large Language Models (LLMs), are at the forefront. Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases has shifted from a niche skill to a core requirement in many job descriptions. Other highly sought-after skills in 2026 include prompt engineering, MLOps (Machine Learning Operations), and proficiency in at least one major cloud platform like AWS or GCP. Foundational skills like Python and SQL remain crucial, but the expectation has evolved from basic scripting to building functional data pipelines. According to LinkedIn, AI engineering roles in India are growing at a staggering 51% year-on-year.
Where the Jobs Are: Key Sectors and Roles
The hiring surge is being led by a few key sectors. IT services giants and Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are major recruiters, absorbing a large portion of the AI talent. The BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) sector is another significant hirer, using AI for fraud detection, risk analysis, and customer operations. Product and e-commerce companies also continue to be major players. The most in-demand roles include Machine Learning Engineer, which appears in the vast majority of AI job postings, and Data Scientist. However, newer, fast-growing roles like Generative AI/LLM Developer and MLOps Engineer are gaining prominence, often with highly competitive salaries due to a smaller talent pool.
The Salary Question: A Premium on New Skills
The intense demand and talent scarcity have led to a significant salary premium for professionals with the right AI skills. Reports indicate that upskilling in AI can lead to an average salary increase of up to 150%. For freshers, a strong AI skill set can elevate starting salaries from the standard ₹4-5 LPA to a much higher bracket of ₹8-15 LPA. Experienced professionals with specialized skills are commanding even greater figures. Mid-level engineers with expertise in LLM fine-tuning and AI agent design can reportedly earn between ₹40 to 65 LPA. Roles like Generative AI Engineer and MLOps professional are seeing senior talent command salaries in the range of ₹58-60 LPA, particularly within GCCs, which are aggressively competing for talent.
The Widening Skills Gap
While the hiring numbers are encouraging, they also highlight a critical challenge: a widening skills gap. The employees losing jobs in areas like customer support, which are being replaced by chatbots, are rarely the ones qualified for the new AI engineering roles. This is creating a two-tier labor market where demand for experienced, skilled professionals soars while opportunities for entry-level workers in traditional roles shrink. Reports suggest that for every 10 open Generative AI roles, only one qualified engineer is available, and this talent gap is expected to grow. This puts immense pressure on both individuals and the broader ecosystem—including academia and industry—to accelerate upskilling and reskilling initiatives to meet the market's evolving needs.
