A New Gateway to the Wild
Planning a wildlife safari has often involved a complicated juggle of booking train tickets, securing elusive safari permits, and finding accommodation. Recognizing this, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has partnered with the Maharashtra
Forest Department to launch 'Vandarshan', a series of integrated wildlife tour packages. This initiative, unveiled on International Tiger Day, aims to streamline the entire process into a single, hassle-free booking. For travellers, this means confirmed train tickets from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), guaranteed safari permits, hotel stays, and local transport are all bundled together. The tours are designed as four-night, five-day itineraries, making them a perfect extended weekend getaway for families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Destination Spotlight: Maharashtra's Tiger Heartland
The new packages open up access to six of Maharashtra’s premier wildlife destinations in the Vidarbha region. These include four renowned tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Bor, and Navegaon-Nagzira. Also included are the Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuaries. Tadoba is famously known as 'The Jewel of Vidarbha' and offers some of the highest tiger-sighting probabilities in India. Pench National Park, which straddles Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, is the legendary forest that inspired Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'. These parks are not just about tigers; they are rich ecosystems teeming with leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), gaur, and a spectacular diversity of birdlife. The new tours provide a structured and reliable way to experience these protected natural treasures.
The All-Inclusive Journey Explained
The core promise of the Vandarshan package is convenience. Travellers will journey from Mumbai CSMT aboard the Vidarbha Express, an overnight train that reaches the Nagpur and Gondia region, which serves as the gateway to these parks. While the train provides access, travellers should note that road transfers are required to reach the final destinations. For instance, Tadoba is about a 140 km drive from Nagpur, while Pench is around 90 km away. The package includes these road transfers in comfortable vehicles. Upon arrival, accommodation in quality hotels or resorts is arranged, along with all meals. The most crucial component is the guaranteed safari permit, which often sells out months in advance. By bundling these permits, IRCTC removes the biggest hurdle for aspiring safari-goers.
Planning Your Trip: Season and Booking
The best time to visit these parks for wildlife sightings is typically from October to June. The core zones of most Maharashtra parks, including Tadoba and Pench, remain closed during the monsoon, from late June or early July until September 30th, reopening on October 1st each year. The dry summer months from March to June are particularly good for spotting tigers as the animals congregate near water bodies. IRCTC will offer five distinct curated itineraries tailored to different interests, such as family tours, photography-focused trips, and birdwatching expeditions. Bookings for these 'Vandarshan' packages can be made directly through the official IRCTC Tourism website, irctctourism.com. Prospective travellers can navigate to the 'Packages' section to find and book their preferred wildlife tour.
Understanding the Value
While IRCTC has not yet published a fixed per-package price list, the value extends beyond just the monetary cost. The real currency here is certainty. A single safari permit for a jeep in Tadoba's core zone can cost anywhere from ₹5,800 to over ₹12,800 on a weekend, and these are often snapped up within minutes of becoming available online, 120 days in advance. By providing an assured permit, confirmed train travel, and pre-booked accommodation, the package eliminates logistical stress and uncertainty. It transforms a potentially complicated, multi-step booking process into a single click, allowing travellers to focus on the excitement of the upcoming adventure rather than the anxieties of planning it. This initiative is expected to significantly boost sustainable tourism in the region by making these wild spaces more accessible to everyone.
