Official 2026-27 Season Dates
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve officially reopened for the 2026-27 tourist season on October 3, 2026. Following the annual closure for the monsoon season, Jeep Safaris commenced on the opening day, marking the start of wildlife watching activities.
While the park typically remains open until around May, the exact closing date in 2027 will depend on the arrival of the next monsoon. For now, the prime window for visitors is officially underway. Elephant safaris, another popular attraction, are expected to resume by November 1, 2026, after necessary preparations and path inspections are complete.
The Reason for the Seasonal Break
Kaziranga's annual closure is not arbitrary; it's a crucial part of the park's ecological cycle. The park is situated in the floodplains of the mighty Brahmaputra River. During the monsoon months, from roughly June to September, large parts of the park become submerged. This natural flooding is vital for replenishing the wetlands and grasslands that support its incredible biodiversity. However, it also makes the safari trails impassable and unsafe for vehicles. The closure allows the landscape to recover and ensures that when visitors return, the infrastructure is safe and the ecosystem is thriving.
Understanding the Safari Zones
Kaziranga is divided into four main tourism zones, each offering a distinct experience. For the initial reopening, Jeep Safaris are available in the Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges, with others set to follow. Central Range (Kohora): Often considered the park's primary zone, it boasts a mix of grasslands and forests. It is popular for sightings of the one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants, and swamp deer. This range is well-equipped for tourists. Western Range (Bagori): This zone has a very high density of rhinos and is a fantastic place for close-up sightings. It is also excellent for spotting wild water buffalo and swamp deer. Both Jeep and elephant safaris are very popular here. Eastern Range (Agoratoli): Known for its rich birdlife and serene wetlands, this range is a paradise for birdwatchers. It's also a good place to spot water birds and the occasional tiger near the water bodies. Burapahar Range: This zone offers a more rugged, hilly terrain. It is great for those interested in trekking and is known for sightings of hoolock gibbons and other primates.
Jeep Safari Timings and Booking
For the 2026-27 season, Jeep Safaris are operating in two daily slots. The morning safari runs from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and the afternoon safari is scheduled from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. These timings are strictly regulated to manage the flow of vehicles and minimise disturbance to the wildlife. Due to the park's immense popularity, it is highly recommended to book your safari in advance. Bookings can be made through the official government portal or via registered private travel agencies. You will need to provide identification details for all visitors at the time of booking.
Making the Most of Your Visit
While rhino sightings are the main draw, Kaziranga is home to the 'Big Five': the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, Asian Elephant, Royal Bengal Tiger, Wild Water Buffalo, and Swamp Deer. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. To maximise your chances of sightings, consider taking both a morning and an afternoon safari, as different animals are active at different times. The best time to visit within the season is often considered to be from November to April, when the weather is pleasant and the tall elephant grass has dried out, offering better visibility. Remember to carry binoculars, a good camera, and a valid ID. Most importantly, follow your guide's instructions and maintain a respectful distance from the animals for a safe and memorable experience.
