A New Kind of Engineering Degree
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a forward-thinking B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. This is not merely a specialisation tacked onto a computer science degree; it's a dedicated undergraduate programme
built from the ground up. Offered through the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, the course aims to produce graduates who can meet the complex demands of the modern technology sector. The curriculum was carefully developed to align with the needs of both industry and the global research community. Admission to the highly competitive programme, which accepts an intake of 50 students, is through the JEE (Advanced) examination.
Bridging the Theory-Practice Divide
The core philosophy of the programme is to move beyond theoretical knowledge and immerse students in real-world problem-solving. The headline's promise of a "practical test" is embedded in the course structure, which has a strong emphasis on applying data analytics and AI techniques to tangible challenges across various domains. Alongside its flagship B.Tech programme, IIT Madras is also making AI education more accessible through other initiatives. The institute has launched several beginner-friendly online courses via the SWAYAM Plus platform, an initiative of the Ministry of Education. These courses, part of an 'AI for All' campaign, require no prior coding or AI experience and are open to learners from diverse academic backgrounds, including arts, commerce, and science. Topics range from 'AI for Aspiring Engineers' and 'Prompt Engineering' to unique applications like 'Cricket Analytics with AI'. While many courses are free, they offer a path to certification and can even be integrated into university curricula for academic credit, furthering the goal of equipping a wider population with crucial AI skills.
