A Celebration in Carbon Fibre
The Pagani Huayra 70 Derecho isn't just another limited-run hypercar; it's a piece of rolling sculpture designed to celebrate the 70th birthday of the company's founder, Horacio Pagani. Created by Pagani's 'Grandi Complicazioni' special projects division,
the Derecho is the second of three 'Huayra 70' models, each a bespoke masterpiece. The name 'Derecho' is taken from a rare and powerful type of straight-line windstorm, a fitting description for a car that channels immense power with surgical precision. Its stunning bodywork, finished in a special Pearl Orange and Inky Blue, features a semi-transparent paint that allows the intricate fish-bone weave of the carbon fibre chassis to show through, a signature Pagani detail.
The Heart of the Storm
At the core of the Huayra 70 Derecho lies a formidable power source: a 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine built by Mercedes-AMG specifically for Pagani. This powerplant produces a staggering 852 horsepower (864 PS) and 1,100 Nm of torque, numbers that place it at the absolute pinnacle of road-legal performance cars. All of that power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, promising a driving experience that is as challenging as it is rewarding. While Pagani hasn't released acceleration figures, the car has an electronically limited top speed of 218 mph (350 km/h), a testament to its incredible aerodynamic and mechanical capabilities.
The Return of the Gated Manual
Perhaps the most talked-about feature of the 70 Derecho is its transmission. In an era where even the most focused hypercars rely on paddle-shifted dual-clutch systems, Pagani has opted for a seven-speed manual gearbox. This isn't just any manual; it features a beautiful and intricate exposed gated shifter, a mechanical work of art that serves as the cabin's centerpiece. This deliberate choice harks back to a classic era of sports cars, prioritizing driver involvement and the tactile sensation of a perfect gear change over fractions of a second saved on a lap time. Developed with transmission specialist Xtrac, this setup is a bold declaration that the connection between driver and machine remains paramount.
An Interior of Artistry
Stepping inside the Huayra 70 Derecho reveals a cabin that blends high-tech materials with old-world craftsmanship. The interior is a symphony of Ceramic White and Tricolore Blue leather, accented with contrast stitching and exposed blue carbon fibre. Details from the exterior, such as the Pearl Orange, are tastefully carried over to the steering wheel's 12 o'clock marker and the top of the gear knob, creating a cohesive design. The switchgear and instrumentation are milled from high-quality metals, resembling fine jewelry more than typical automotive components. It’s an environment designed not just for driving, but for celebrating the artistry of the automobile itself, a core tenet of Horacio Pagani’s philosophy.
