According to its latest earnings report for the second quarter of 2026, Korean Air’s cargo business generated 1.54 trillion won (approximately $1.07 billion). This represents a 46.1% increase compared to the same period last year. The surge was so significant
that it helped the airline achieve record-high quarterly revenue of over 5 trillion won, even as overall operating profits were squeezed by rising jet fuel prices. While passenger travel also grew, the cargo division was the standout performer, with airline executives identifying shipments of AI chips, server components, and data centre infrastructure as the primary engine of this explosive growth. This performance signals a major shift in the air freight market, where the transport of high-tech components is becoming a critical revenue driver.
The AI Gold Rush Takes Flight
So, why are computer chips suddenly filling up cargo planes? The answer lies in the global race to build the infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Tech giants are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in data centres, which require vast quantities of high-performance processors and advanced memory chips. Unlike consumer goods that can travel for weeks on container ships, these components are extremely valuable, delicate, and time-sensitive. A delay in a shipment of crucial processors can hold up a multi-billion dollar data centre project, making the speed of air freight a worthwhile expense. This demand has become so intense that it has officially replaced cross-border e-commerce as the main growth pillar for the air cargo industry, a trend that was unthinkable just a couple of years ago.
South Korea's Strategic Advantage
Korean Air is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this trend. South Korea is a global semiconductor powerhouse, home to giants like Samsung and SK Hynix, which are at the forefront of producing the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips essential for AI applications. As these companies ramp up production to meet overwhelming global demand, their national flag carrier becomes a primary logistics partner. Jaedong Eum, head of Korean Air's cargo business, noted that demand for these advanced chips is incredibly visible, with orders already stretching two to three years into the future. This gives the airline a clear and predictable pipeline of high-value cargo, allowing it to flexibly deploy its fleet, including non-scheduled charter flights, to maximize profitability.
A New Air Cargo Landscape
The semiconductor boom is creating a two-tiered air freight market. While general cargo rates remain sensitive to economic fluctuations, the demand for transporting AI hardware has sent rates from key Asian manufacturing hubs to North America soaring. This specialized cargo requires different handling, with some airlines introducing new software to determine how to safely load and secure sensitive equipment. The surge has been so pronounced that cargo hubs like Taipei have been filled to capacity, tightening available space across the entire trans-Pacific corridor. This trend benefits carriers with strong networks in Asia, like Korean Air, China Airlines, and EVA Air, all of which have reported significant cargo revenue growth driven by AI.
Clear Skies or Turbulence Ahead?
The question for Korean Air and the industry is how long this boom will last. Unlike the fickle nature of consumer trends, the build-out of AI infrastructure is a multi-year project. Leading chipmakers like TSMC have projected that strong demand could persist until 2030, suggesting a long runway for this new air cargo category. For its part, Korean Air has stated its intention to continue focusing on these high-growth segments. However, the industry is not without risks. Geopolitical tensions could disrupt supply chains, and rising fuel costs remain a persistent threat to profitability. But for now, the airline's fortunes are closely tied to the silicon chips that are powering the future, turning its cargo holds into a critical link in the global AI revolution.
