More Than Just a Map
Most of us interact with space technology daily, often without a second thought. When you use a ride-hailing app or check Google Maps, you are tapping into a global network of positioning satellites. India has its own indigenous regional navigation system,
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), which provides accurate positioning and timing services across the country and its surrounding region. Designed to offer more precise location data within India, NavIC is finding its way into smartphones and public systems, reducing dependency on foreign networks. Similarly, the GAGAN system enhances GPS signals to ensure the safety and precision of aircraft landings in Indian airspace, a critical background operation for modern aviation. But the impact of this data goes far beyond simple navigation.
A Lifeline for Farmers and Fishermen
For millions in India, space data is a direct line to a better livelihood. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) leverages its Earth observation satellites to provide crucial information to the agricultural sector. Through programs like 'Forecasting Agricultural output using Space, Agro-meteorology and Land based observations' (FASAL), farmers receive data on crop health, soil moisture, and pest infestations. This allows for precision farming—optimising the use of water and fertilisers, which boosts yields and promotes sustainability. This satellite data also supports the government's crop insurance scheme, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, by enabling accurate assessment of crop damage. For coastal communities, ISRO’s satellite data on ocean temperatures and chlorophyll content helps identify Potential Fishing Zones (PFZs). Advisories are sent to fishermen's mobile phones, guiding them to areas with abundant fish, saving them fuel and time while increasing their catch.
Guarding Against Natural Disasters
Given India's diverse and challenging climate, early disaster warning is a matter of life and death. Satellites are the nation’s eyes in the sky, providing critical real-time data on developing threats. The INSAT series of satellites, for example, monitors cloud formations to provide early warnings for cyclones, tracking their intensity and path, which enables timely evacuations. During floods, radar imaging satellites like RISAT, which can see through clouds, map the extent of inundated areas, helping authorities direct rescue and relief operations efficiently. ISRO's Disaster Management Support Programme works closely with national and state agencies, providing a continuous flow of information for everything from floods and cyclones to landslides and forest fires through portals like Bhuvan and the National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM).
Building Smarter Cities and Infrastructure
As India rapidly urbanises, managing the growth of its cities is a monumental task. High-resolution satellite imagery has become an indispensable tool for urban planners. It helps in mapping land use, monitoring unauthorised construction, and planning new infrastructure like roads and pipelines. The National Urban Information System (NUIS) uses satellite data to create detailed geospatial databases for hundreds of towns, aiding in the creation of master plans. This technology is also used to monitor the progress of major national projects, ensuring transparency and accountability. By analysing how cities expand and where infrastructure is needed most, space data helps build more resilient and sustainable urban environments for the future.
