information. This is rooted in a powerful cognitive shortcut called confirmation bias, where we unconsciously seek out, interpret, and remember information that validates what we already think. Before you even begin your research, enter a debate, or craft a complex AI prompt, you define and write down the exact evidence that would cause you to change your position. This simple act short-circuits the soldier mindset. Instead of asking, "How can I prove I'm right?" you are forced to ask, "What information would show me I'm wrong?" This technique is a form of inversion, a mental model championed by investor Charlie Munger, who famously advised to "invert, always invert." By considering the opposite of what you want to achieve, you can identify blind spots and navigate toward better outcomes.
Why Writing It Down Is Crucial
Thinking about what might change your mind is a good start, but the physical act of writing it down is a game-changer. Research into expressive writing shows that putting thoughts into words engages the brain differently, forcing clarity and structure on otherwise jumbled ideas. When you write down your conditions for changing your mind, you create a concrete contract with yourself. This makes it much harder to subconsciously “move the goalposts” when you encounter information that challenges your view. The written record holds you accountable. It creates a neutral space for reflection, allowing you to process information more logically by calming the brain's initial emotional, defensive response. It's a way to step outside of your own head and evaluate an argument with greater objectivity.
Smarter Prompting in the Age of AI

By prompting the AI to find that specific, disconfirming evidence, you are using it as a true tool for critical thinking, not just a high-tech confirmation machine.

This principle extends far beyond interacting with technology. Imagine heading into a high-stakes meeting about a project's future. Before you walk in, you write: "I will be open to pausing this project if the finance team can show a budget overrun of more than 20% or if engineering presents a critical flaw we can't solve this quarter." This prepares you to listen for specific, material facts rather than getting bogged down in rhetoric or office politics. It demonstrates intellectual honesty, a cornerstone of trust and effective leadership. This practice can be applied to personal decisions, team strategy, and even difficult conversations.
