The New Contender: Kashmir's Valley View
The recently completed Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is more than just infrastructure; it's a breathtaking journey through paradise. This route offers passengers unparalleled views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, deep green valleys, and
dramatic gorges. The crowning glory is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, which soars 359 meters above the riverbed, offering a perspective once reserved for the clouds. The line also features India's first cable-stayed railway bridge and numerous long tunnels carved through the formidable Pir Panjal range. Connecting Jammu to Baramulla, this all-weather route has been called India's 'Switzerland experience', especially when the Vande Bharat Express glides through a landscape blanketed in snow.
The Himalayan Queen: Kalka to Shimla
A journey on the Kalka-Shimla Railway is like stepping back in time. This narrow-gauge 'Toy Train', a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been charming passengers since 1903. The train slowly winds its way up the Himalayan foothills, navigating over 800 bridges, 102 tunnels, and countless sharp curves across its 96-kilometre route. The slow pace is deliberate, allowing travellers to soak in panoramic views of lush pine forests, terraced fields, and misty valleys. Quaint colonial-era stations dot the path, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere. For a truly magical experience, taking the trip during the winter months rewards riders with a spectacular snow-covered landscape.
The Tea Garden Express: Darjeeling's Toy Train
Another gem in India's trio of UNESCO-listed mountain railways is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Built between 1879 and 1881, this iconic 'Toy Train' travels from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, puffing steam as it climbs nearly 2,200 meters. The route is famed for its ingenious engineering, including five loops and six zig-zags used to gain altitude. The most famous of these is the Batasia Loop, which offers a stunning 360-degree view of Darjeeling with the majestic Kanchenjunga peak in the background. The train chugs through bustling market towns, dense forests, and the vibrant green tea plantations that make this region famous, offering an intimate and unforgettable glimpse into life in the Eastern Himalayas.
The Southern Star: Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Down south, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway offers a completely different, yet equally enchanting, mountain experience. Known fondly as the Ooty Toy Train, it holds the distinction of being the only rack railway in India and having the steepest track in Asia. This UNESCO World Heritage line, completed in 1899, journeys from Mettupalayam in the plains up to the misty hill station of Ooty. The vintage blue and cream carriages are pulled by a classic steam locomotive for part of the journey, passing through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and past dense forests, waterfalls, and ravines of the Nilgiri Hills, also known as the Blue Mountains.
The Coastal Classic: The Konkan Railway
Moving from the mountains to the sea, the Konkan Railway offers one of the most beautiful coastal journeys in the world. Connecting Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka along the Arabian Sea, this route is a modern engineering marvel completed in the 1990s. The journey from Mumbai to Goa is a visual feast, showcasing the lush Sahyadri mountains on one side and the sparkling sea on the other. The train cuts through 91 tunnels and crosses over 2,000 bridges, passing picturesque villages, coconut groves, and winding rivers. Particularly stunning during the monsoon season, the route provides views of cascading waterfalls, including the famous Dudhsagar Falls, making it a favourite for nature lovers.
