The All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2023-24 revealed that India hosted 58,134 students from 173 countries. While Nepal predictably led the list, accounting for 24.1% of all foreign students, the UAE's position at number two, contributing
7% of the total, has caught many by surprise. This places the Gulf nation ahead of countries like the United States, Bangladesh, and Nigeria in sending students to Indian campuses. The majority of these students, over 73%, are enrolled in undergraduate programmes. This data points to a significant trend where India is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for higher learning for students from specific regions.
The Diaspora Connection
A crucial factor behind the high numbers from both the UAE and the US is the large and well-established Indian diaspora in these nations. Many of the students are Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) whose parents choose to send them to India for their university education. This decision is often rooted in a desire for cultural connection, allowing children who have grown up abroad to experience life in their home country. For these families, Indian universities are not just academic institutions but also a bridge to their heritage. This trend suggests that the flow of students is significantly influenced by familial and cultural ties, not just nationality.
Affordability and Proximity
For families in the UAE, the economics of an Indian education are hard to ignore. The cost of tuition and living in India is substantially lower than in popular Western destinations like the US, UK, or Canada. This makes pursuing high-quality degrees in fields like engineering, medicine, and technology far more accessible. Furthermore, the geographical proximity is a major advantage. A flight from the UAE to India is only a few hours, making travel for holidays and family visits convenient and affordable, a stark contrast to the long-haul journeys required to reach North America or Europe.
A Two-Way Educational Street
This student flow is part of a much broader, deepening educational partnership between India and the UAE. The relationship is no longer one-sided. Prestigious Indian institutions are establishing a significant presence in the Gulf. IIT Delhi has already opened an international campus in Abu Dhabi, and IIM Ahmedabad has a campus in Dubai. This academic collaboration is a key pillar of the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting a shared vision to invest in knowledge exchange and human capital. Initiatives like the 'Study in India' program, which aims to attract 200,000 international students by 2030, further underscore India's ambition to become a global education hub.
India's Growing Academic Influence
The influx of students from the UAE and other nations signals India's rising status as a quality education provider for the Global South. States like Karnataka, Punjab, and Maharashtra have become major hubs for these students, hosting thousands and creating multicultural campus environments. While India still has a long way to go to match the sheer numbers of international students in countries like the US or UK, the trend is clear. India's value proposition is built on a unique combination of affordability, cultural familiarity, and increasingly, world-class academic opportunities that resonate strongly with students from neighbouring regions and the wider diaspora.
