When you consume carbs, your body breaks them down into glucose for immediate energy. Any excess is converted into a substance called glycogen and stored in your muscles and liver, ready to be deployed the moment you start your workout. This readily available energy allows you to push harder, lift heavier, and complete more reps, which is the fundamental stimulus for muscle growth.

Your stored muscle glycogen is like the gas tank for your workouts. Just one intense lifting session can deplete these stores by as much as 40 percent. Not all carbohydrates are created equal, and timing your intake can maximize their benefits. Carbs are generally categorized as complex or simple. Complex carbohydrates, like oats, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and whole grains, break down slowly, providing a steady release of energy. These are ideal to consume a few hours before your workout to ensure your energy levels are stable throughout your session. Simple carbohydrates, found in foods like fruits, honey, and white rice, digest quickly, providing a rapid energy boost. These are most beneficial either shortly before a workout for a quick top-up or, more importantly, immediately after training. Consuming simple carbs post-workout helps to quickly replenish depleted glycogen stores and kick-start the recovery process. A popular and effective strategy is to pair these post-workout carbs with a source of protein to optimize muscle repair and growth.
