The Study Sparking the Conversation
A new study published in the 'Nutrition Journal' has put the diet of recreational athletes under the microscope. Researchers from several universities, including Rutgers, conducted a randomized crossover trial to see what happens when active people switch
between an omnivorous diet and a completely plant-based one. The study followed 36 recreational athletes—a mix of runners and resistance trainers—for two four-week periods. In one phase, they ate their standard diet including meat; in the other, they consumed only plant-based meals provided by university dining halls. The goal was simple: to measure any significant changes in strength and endurance.
Findings on Strength and Power
For those worried about losing their gains in the gym, the results were reassuring. The study measured the maximum strength of resistance trainers across exercises like the chest press, lat pulldown, and leg press. After four weeks on the plant-based diet, their combined strength was about 4% lower. However, this difference was not statistically significant, meaning researchers concluded it could easily be due to random chance rather than the diet itself. This aligns with a growing body of research, including several meta-analyses, which have found that as long as total protein intake is sufficient, plant-based diets are just as effective as meat-inclusive diets for building muscle and strength. The key seems to be the total protein consumed, not its source.
What About Endurance?
Endurance athletes also saw little to no negative impact. The runners in the study were tested with a 12-minute timed run. On the plant-based diet, they covered a slightly shorter distance on average—about 36 meters less—but just like the strength results, this difference was not statistically significant. Some researchers suggest that plant-based diets might even offer an edge for endurance athletes over the long term. These diets are typically higher in carbohydrates, which are the body's primary fuel for sustained aerobic activity. They are also rich in nitrates from vegetables like beetroot and leafy greens, which can improve blood flow and oxygen efficiency.
The Recovery Advantage
One of the most compelling arguments for plant-based performance isn't just about what happens during the workout, but after. Plant-based diets are packed with anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants. Intense exercise creates inflammation and oxidative stress, which contribute to muscle soreness and fatigue. A diet rich in plants may help mitigate this damage, allowing athletes to recover faster and train more consistently. A separate study from August 2026 even found that a one-month vegan diet could alter epigenetic markers in the body associated with reduced inflammation, suggesting a deeper biological benefit.
Putting It All Together
So what does this new study really tell us? For the average recreational athlete, adopting a well-planned plant-based diet is unlikely to harm your performance in the gym or on the track. While participants in the Rutgers study consumed less protein on the plant-based plan, their intake was still within the recommended range for general fitness. The findings should reassure physically active people that they can comfortably incorporate more plant-based foods without worrying about derailing their fitness goals. However, the study was short and focused on non-elite athletes. Those making the switch should still pay attention to their nutrition, ensuring they get enough total calories, sufficient protein from varied sources like beans, lentils, tofu, and quinoa, and consider supplementing nutrients like Vitamin B12, which is not found in plants.
