Indian Railways has extended its ultra-low-cost travel insurance to passengers booking at reservation counters, a move that offers a significant safety net for millions. For just 45 paise, this facility is now more accessible than ever before.
What Is The Optional Travel Insurance Scheme?
The Optional
Travel Insurance Scheme (OTIS) is an initiative by Indian Railways, in partnership with insurance companies, to provide financial protection to passengers in case of train accidents or other 'untoward incidents' during their journey. Previously available only for tickets booked online via the IRCTC website or app, the facility has now been extended to tickets purchased at physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters across the country, starting from October 27, 2026. The scheme is available to all Indian citizens holding a valid confirmed, Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), or partially confirmed ticket. It is not available for unreserved or general class tickets, and children below the age of five are not covered.
A Tiny Premium for Major Coverage
For a premium of just 45 paise per person, the scheme offers substantial financial coverage. In the unfortunate event of death or permanent total disability resulting from a covered incident, the compensation is up to ₹10 lakh. For permanent partial disability, the coverage is up to ₹7.5 lakh. The policy also includes provisions for medical expenses, covering up to ₹2 lakh for hospitalisation due to injuries sustained during the incident. Additionally, a sum of ₹10,000 is provided for the transportation of mortal remains. This incredible value-for-money proposition makes it one of the most accessible insurance products in the country, aiming to provide a safety net for every passenger.
How to Opt-In at the Counter
Getting this insurance at a PRS counter is a straightforward process. When filling out the standard reservation form, you simply need to indicate that you want to opt for the travel insurance. A crucial requirement is that the payment for the ticket fare and the 45-paise premium must be made digitally, using a card or UPI. This is because the small premium amount cannot be easily transacted in cash. You must also provide a valid mobile number on the reservation form. This is mandatory, as the insurance company will send the policy details and a link to fill in nominee information directly to your registered mobile number and email address. The option must be chosen at the time of booking and cannot be added later.
Why This Extension Is a Big Deal
While a large percentage of train tickets are now booked online, a significant number of passengers, especially from rural or remote areas, still rely on physical reservation counters. This expansion of the insurance scheme was initiated following a directive from the Supreme Court to ensure that offline passengers receive the same protections as those booking online. By bridging this gap, Indian Railways is making financial security accessible to millions more travellers. It ensures that the benefits of this welfare measure are not limited by a passenger's access to the internet, promoting greater equity and safety for everyone who travels by train.
Key Details to Remember
Once you opt for the insurance and book your ticket, you will receive an SMS and/or email from the insurance provider with your policy details. This message will contain a link to update your nominee information. It is vital to complete this step to ensure a smooth claim process for your family if the need arises. The insurance coverage is valid from the scheduled departure of the train until its arrival at the destination, including the process of boarding and alighting. The policy covers incidents like train collisions, derailments, and other accidents as defined under the Railways Act. If you have to file a claim, you must contact the insurance company directly, as IRCTC and Indian Railways only act as facilitators for the service.
