During the Google I/O Connect India 2026 event in Bengaluru, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar unveiled a comprehensive strategy to establish India's first government-led Artificial Intelligence University. This isn't just about a new building; it's a foundational
play to cement Karnataka's leadership in the global AI race. The announcement detailed a 100-acre world-class campus in Bengaluru, complemented by regional campuses in key cities like Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Mysuru. The goal is to nurture world-class AI talent, accelerate cutting-edge research, and foster deep collaboration between academia, industry, and the government. This move signals a clear intent to transition Karnataka from being a tech services hub to a deep-tech innovation powerhouse.
Becoming an 'AI-Native' State
The Chief Minister articulated a vision for Karnataka to become an "AI-native state." This goes beyond technological slogans, aiming to integrate AI responsibly into the fabric of society to improve daily lives. The applications cited are practical and impactful: helping teachers teach better, enabling doctors to diagnose diseases earlier, providing farmers with better advice, and allowing citizens to access government services with speed and dignity.
