Delhi is set to offer a new perspective on the city with its first-ever Yamuna River cruise. Christened the 'Namo Yamuna – River Safari', this eco-friendly initiative promises a fresh recreational outing for residents and tourists alike. Here is what
you need to know.
Vessel Capacity and Design
The central question for many potential visitors is how many people can enjoy the cruise at once. The vessels designed for the Namo Yamuna River Safari have a maximum capacity of 30 passengers per trip. This intimate setting is intended to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience without overcrowding. The boat itself is a modern, catamaran-style vessel, designed to be eco-friendly with electric-solar hybrid propulsion. It is a 40-foot boat that is 11 feet wide and sits shallowly in the water, making it suitable for the river's conditions. For passenger comfort and safety, the boats are equipped with bio-toilets to prevent river pollution, safety jackets for all passengers, and a public announcement system.
Route, Timings, and Duration
The cruise operates on a specific, cleaner stretch of the Yamuna. The designated route runs between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering a distance of approximately 5 to 6 kilometres upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage. A complete round trip is expected to last around 40 minutes, offering a brief but scenic escape on the water. Trial runs for the service began in late October 2026, with a formal public launch anticipated before the Chhath Puja festival in mid-November. While a full daily schedule is yet to be finalised, initial plans suggest the service will run from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with at least four trips planned per day.
Ticket Price and Booking
The cost for this unique experience has been set to be accessible for families and individuals. The proposed fare for the cruise trip itself is ₹500 per person. Some reports also mention a nominal premises entry fee of ₹50 might be applicable at the boarding point. Once the service is formally launched and operational for the public, tickets are expected to be available for purchase online through the official Delhi Tourism website. As the service is still in its trial phase, it is advisable to check for official announcements regarding the final booking process and public launch date before planning your visit.
The Onboard and Riverside Experience
The cruise aims to be more than just a boat ride; it is being developed as a complete recreational experience. Onboard, passengers can expect to see a calmer, greener side of Delhi, with views of ghats, temples, and riverfront landscapes often missed from the city's roads. The project is part of a larger vision to develop the entire area into a family-friendly picnic destination. Plans are underway to build supporting infrastructure on the banks, including a restaurant, food kiosks, a children's play zone, and even a musical fountain and water sports facilities in the future. This development is a collaborative effort between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and several Delhi government departments to boost tourism and create new employment opportunities.
