Deadline Firmly in Place
Despite widespread speculation and requests from various quarters, the government has not announced an extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27. The official income tax e-filing portal continues to display July
31, 2026, as the final day for most individual taxpayers. This applies to salaried individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and others whose accounts do not require an audit. In recent years, deadline extensions were common, often due to the pandemic or portal glitches. However, authorities have indicated that the system is more robust this year, making an extension unlikely. Tax experts are uniformly advising taxpayers to assume July 31 is the final date and to complete their filing immediately.
The Consequences of Missing the Deadline
Failing to file your ITR by midnight tonight carries several financial penalties. The most immediate is a late filing fee under Section 234F of the Income-tax Act. If your total income is above ₹5 lakh, the penalty is ₹5,000. For those with a total income of ₹5 lakh or less, the fee is capped at ₹1,000. Beyond the flat fee, if you have outstanding tax liability, you will be charged interest at a rate of 1% per month on the amount due, calculated from the deadline until you file. Furthermore, late filers lose the ability to carry forward certain losses (like those from capital gains or business) to offset against future income, a significant disadvantage for investors and business owners.
A Checklist for Last-Minute Filers
If you are scrambling to file today, focus on accuracy to avoid future issues. First, gather all necessary documents: your Form 16 from your employer, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) from the tax portal, bank statements, and proofs of investment for deductions. Ensure you are using the correct ITR form for your income profile; using the wrong form can lead to your return being marked as defective. Double-check that your bank account is pre-validated on the portal to ensure any refund is credited smoothly. The portal's pre-fill feature can save time, but it's crucial to verify every figure against your own documents.
What if You Still Can't File Today?
If you miss the July 31 deadline, all is not lost, but you must act quickly. You can still file a 'belated return' for AY 2026-27. The last date to file a belated return is December 31, 2026. While filing a belated return allows you to become compliant, you will still have to pay the applicable late filing fee and any interest on tax due. It is always better to file a belated return than to not file at all, as non-filing can lead to more severe consequences, including prosecution in some cases. Filing late also means your refund, if any, will be delayed significantly.
Navigating Portal Issues and Filing Errors
The income tax portal often experiences heavy traffic and potential slowdowns on the last day. If you encounter issues, try filing during non-peak hours, like early in the morning or late at night. If you make a mistake in a hurried filing, don't panic. The tax laws allow you to file a 'revised return' to correct any errors or omissions in your original filing. For AY 2026-27, a revised return can be filed until March 31, 2027. The key is to file the initial return by the due date to avoid the primary penalties, even if it's not perfect. Filing on time and revising later is a much better strategy than filing late.
