Meet India's New Watcher in the Sky
Launched aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from Sriharikota on September 4, 2026, EOS-05 is a sophisticated Earth observation satellite. After a series of complex orbit-raising manoeuvres, the spacecraft is settling into its final position in a geosynchronous
orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. Weighing over 2,300 kg, this state-of-the-art satellite is designed for a mission life of about 10 years. Its successful deployment is a significant achievement, especially following the setback of the similar EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1) mission, which failed during launch in 2021. EOS-05 represents a major leap forward, giving India a powerful new platform for continuous surveillance and monitoring.
The Geosynchronous Advantage
So, what makes its orbit so special? Most Earth observation satellites, like those in the Cartosat series, operate in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), just a few hundred kilometres up. While LEO allows for very high-resolution imagery, these satellites are constantly moving around the planet and can only revisit the same spot after a period of days. In contrast, a geosynchronous satellite’s orbital period matches Earth's rotation. This means EOS-05 will remain permanently over the same broad region: the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding areas. Instead of brief passes, it provides a persistent, unblinking gaze. This allows for near-real-time monitoring of events as they unfold, a capability that is crucial for tracking fast-moving situations like cyclones, floods, and forest fires.
A 'First' with an Asterisk
The claim that EOS-05 is India's first geosynchronous imaging satellite requires some clarification. For years, ISRO has operated the INSAT series (like INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR) in geostationary orbit. These satellites are primarily designed for meteorology—weather forecasting—and carry imaging payloads for that purpose. However, EOS-05 is different. It is India's first satellite placed in this high orbit that is dedicated to high-resolution land and ocean observation. Its primary mission is not just weather, but detailed, frequent imaging of the landmass for a multitude of applications, from strategic surveillance to disaster management. While INSATs were the pioneers of imaging from GEO, EOS-05 is the first specialist designed for this specific purpose, marking a new strategic focus for ISRO's observation programme.
What It Can—And Cannot—Do
EOS-05 is equipped with advanced multi-spectral and hyperspectral imagers, allowing it to see the Earth in various wavelengths of light. This enables it to monitor agriculture, forestry, water bodies, and changes in land use with high frequency. It can image the entire Indian landmass multiple times a day and focus on specific areas of interest with even quicker revisits. This is invaluable for both civilian and strategic purposes, including monitoring border areas. However, its high altitude comes with a trade-off. Its strength is not in capturing the ultra-fine detail that LEO satellites provide, but in its ability to offer constant oversight of a large area. While officials have noted its strategic applications, they have clarified that it is not a dedicated “spy satellite” but a multi-use asset designed to serve a wide range of national needs.
