The Flight Details You Need
Mongolian carrier Hunnu Air has officially extended its weekly direct flight service between New Delhi and Ulaanbaatar through to late March 2027. This service, which began on September 28, 2026, continues to be a game-changer for travel between the two
nations. Before this direct route, a trip could take a lengthy 13 to 18 hours with layovers in cities like Beijing or Incheon. Now, the journey is slashed to approximately five and a half hours. The flight, MR302, departs from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport every Monday at 8:00 AM, arriving in Ulaanbaatar at 4:00 PM local time. The return flight, MR301, leaves Ulaanbaatar at 3:30 AM, landing in Delhi at 7:00 AM, also on Mondays. This schedule allows for a trip of exactly one week, or multiples thereof, perfect for a dedicated exploration.
More Than Just a Flight
This route is about more than just convenience; it’s a strategic bridge connecting two nations with deep historical ties. The service was launched following an announcement made during Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh's state visit to India in October 2025, highlighting its diplomatic importance. For Mongolia, it provides easier access for its citizens to visit India's significant Buddhist heritage sites. For India, it opens up a relatively unexplored frontier for tourism and strengthens its 'Act East' policy. The connection is also expected to bolster bilateral trade and business opportunities by enabling faster travel and cargo movement.
Why Mongolia Should Be on Your List
For Indian travellers accustomed to popular South-East Asian destinations, Mongolia offers something profoundly different. It's a land of immense, wide-open spaces, from the rugged Gobi Desert to the serene beauty of its vast steppes. The country is one of the last places on Earth where nomadic culture remains a part of everyday life. Visitors can experience this firsthand by staying in a traditional 'ger' (yurt), riding the hardy Mongolian horses, and witnessing a culture deeply connected to nature. It is a destination that prioritises experiences over typical tourist attractions, offering a rare sense of peace and adventure. For those seeking adventure, culture, and a true escape, Mongolia presents an unparalleled opportunity.
Planning Your Mongolian Adventure
The best time to visit Mongolia is during its summer months, from June to August, when the weather is pleasant. However, the flight schedule runs through the winter, offering a chance for intrepid travellers to experience the stark beauty of a Mongolian winter. Indian citizens do require a visa to enter Mongolia, but the process has been streamlined with the availability of an e-visa that can be applied for online for stays up to 30 days. While English is spoken in Ulaanbaatar's tourist areas and by tour operators, the local language is Mongolian. Vegetarian food options can be found in the capital but are very limited in the countryside, so planning ahead is wise. The currency is the Mongolian Tugrik (MNT), and it's best to carry some cash when venturing outside the capital.
