An End to the Unpacking Ritual
Dubai Airports is in the process of rolling out a new generation of high-tech security scanners across its terminals. The primary benefit for passengers is a significant one: the ability to keep electronic devices like laptops and tablets, as well as liquids,
inside hand luggage during the screening process. This move aims to make the entire security check faster, smoother, and far less stressful, eliminating one of the most common bottlenecks and points of frustration in the modern travel experience. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the goal is to make the process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient” for everyone.
How the New Technology Works
The new equipment uses advanced imaging technology, similar to CT scanners found in hospitals, to create detailed 3D images of the contents of a passenger's bag. This allows security personnel and sophisticated AI systems to get a clear view of everything inside without needing items to be separated. The artificial intelligence component helps analyse the images and flag any items that require a secondary, physical inspection, ensuring that security standards are not just maintained, but enhanced, while speeding up the flow of passengers. The move is part of a broader push towards what Dubai Airports calls “barrier-free travel,” integrating technology to create a more seamless journey from check-in to boarding.
A Gradual Rollout Across Terminals
Travellers should note that this upgrade is a gradual, ongoing programme rather than an overnight switch. The new machines are being installed as part of wider refurbishment projects across DXB, including in Terminal 1 and Concourse B. Some of the advanced scanners are already operational. However, because the rollout is happening progressively, passengers may still encounter the older style of security check where unpacking is required. The official advice is to always follow the instructions of the security staff on duty. The ultimate goal, as stated by airport officials, is to eventually replace all the old technology so every passenger has the same convenient experience.
What About the 100ml Liquid Rule?
This is a key point of clarification for all travellers. While the new scanners can see through bags, they do not automatically abolish the existing restrictions on liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs). As of late August 2026, Dubai Airports' official guidance still states that liquids in hand luggage should be in containers no larger than 100ml. Passengers are permitted to carry up to 10 such containers in a single, clear, resealable bag. So, for the time being, do not interpret the new scanner technology as a green light to pack full-sized toiletries in your carry-on. The primary change is that you may not have to take the compliant 100ml liquid bag out for separate screening where the new machines are in use.
Part of a Bigger Biometric Push
This scanner upgrade is just one piece of a larger technological transformation at DXB aimed at creating a touchless and document-light journey. The airport has been heavily investing in biometric systems, using facial recognition at numerous points including check-in, immigration (via Smart Gates), and boarding. Some areas, particularly for premium passengers in Terminal 3, feature AI-powered “Red Carpet” corridors that can process multiple travellers simultaneously without them needing to stop or present a passport. These systems are designed to work together to drastically cut down queue times and create a faster, more fluid passenger experience from kerb to gate.
