An End to the Unpacking Ritual
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is currently installing a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. The primary goal of this technology is to eliminate one of the biggest hassles for modern travellers: the need to remove laptops,
tablets, liquids, and other electronic devices from hand luggage for screening. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the airport is making a significant investment in these new machines to make the entire security process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient.” The rollout is a gradual programme of continuous upgrades, with new machines already being installed to replace older systems.
How the New Technology Works
The new equipment uses sophisticated computed tomography (CT) scanning technology, similar to what is used in the medical field. These scanners create detailed 3D images of the contents of a bag, allowing security staff to get a clear view of everything inside without it being unpacked. Artificial intelligence helps the system analyse these high-resolution images to identify any potential threats. This advanced imaging capability is what allows passengers to keep items like laptops and liquids safely stowed in their carry-on bags. The move is expected to significantly reduce processing times at security checkpoints and lessen the queues that often build up as passengers prepare their belongings for screening.
Part of a Broader 'Smart' Strategy
This scanner upgrade is just one component of Dubai's wider strategy to create a seamless, contactless journey for passengers. The airport has already implemented various biometric systems, including Smart Gates that use facial and iris recognition to speed up immigration. Some Emirates passengers can already experience a fully biometric path from check-in to the boarding gate in Terminal 3, using facial recognition to clear multiple checkpoints without showing a passport. An AI-powered 'Red Carpet Smart Tunnel' is even being trialled, which can process up to 10 passengers at once, clearing immigration in as little as six seconds without them needing to stop.
The Business of a Better Experience
For Dubai Airports, the world's busiest for international travel, efficiency is paramount. By reducing queues and speeding up passenger processing, the airport can handle a greater volume of travellers, which is crucial as it projects traffic to approach nearly 100 million passengers in 2026. A smoother, less stressful airport experience is also a powerful competitive advantage, encouraging travellers and airlines to choose Dubai as a global hub. Investing in technology that enhances both security and convenience helps solidify DXB's reputation as a leader in aviation innovation. While the new scanners are already being installed, the rollout is happening gradually across all terminals. This means travellers should not yet assume every security lane will be equipped with the new technology. For the time being, passengers must continue to follow the instructions of security staff, who will direct them accordingly. If asked to remove laptops or liquids, travellers must still comply. However, as the upgrades continue, the familiar routine of unpacking at security will become increasingly rare. The end goal is a future where passing through security at DXB is as simple as placing your bag on the belt and walking through.
