The Body's Master Clock
Every person operates on an internal 24-hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm. This master clock, located in a part of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, orchestrates countless bodily functions, from our sleep-wake cycles and body temperature
to hormone release and metabolism. Think of it as the conductor of a grand biological orchestra. When this rhythm is stable, our bodies perform optimally. But when it's disrupted—by late nights, shift work, jet lag, or even just inconsistent sleep schedules—the entire symphony can fall out of tune, leading to a cascade of effects. One of the most noticeable consequences of this misalignment is a dramatic shift in our appetite and what we want to eat.
The Craving-Hormone Connection
When your body clock is disturbed, it wreaks havoc on the hormones that regulate hunger. The two key players are ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin, often called the 'hunger hormone', signals your brain that it's time to eat. Leptin, the 'satiety hormone', does the opposite, telling your brain you're full and satisfied. Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation and circadian disruption cause ghrelin levels to spike while leptin levels plummet. This creates a perfect hormonal storm: your body is screaming “I’m hungry!” while the voice that says “I’m full” has been silenced. This imbalance makes you feel hungrier than you actually are, pushing you to consume more calories.
Why We Crave Junk, Not Salad
It’s not just that you feel hungrier; it’s what you feel hungry for. When tired and out of sync, the body doesn't ask for a nutritious salad; it screams for high-calorie, sugary, salty, and fatty foods. There are a few reasons for this. First, a sleep-deprived brain seeks a quick, potent energy source, and nothing delivers that faster than simple carbohydrates and fats. Second, the brain's reward centers become more sensitive, making these highly palatable foods feel extra-satisfying. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex—the region responsible for impulse control and sound decision-making—becomes less active. This combination of heightened reward-seeking and weakened self-control makes it incredibly difficult to resist unhealthy temptations. Some studies even suggest your sense of smell gets sharper when you're tired, making the aroma of a nearby bakery almost impossible to ignore.
A Natural Rhythm for Hunger
Interestingly, even with a perfectly aligned body clock, our appetite naturally fluctuates. Studies have shown that our internal circadian system seems to programme a peak in hunger and cravings in the evening, around 8 p.m., while hunger is at its lowest in the morning. This may be an evolutionary holdover, encouraging our ancestors to eat a large meal to store energy for the overnight fast. However, in our modern world of abundant, calorie-dense food, this natural evening peak in appetite can easily lead to overconsumption and contribute to weight gain, especially if our schedules are already irregular.
How to Reset Your Body Clock
While it may seem like your cravings are in control, you can take steps to get your body clock back on track. The most crucial step is maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Exposing yourself to bright, natural light first thing in the morning helps to reset your master clock. Conversely, dimming the lights and avoiding screens for an hour or two before bed can help your body produce melatonin and prepare for sleep. Regular mealtimes also help to synchronize the peripheral clocks in your digestive system. Finally, being mindful of these biological drivers can help. Knowing that your craving for junk food is a symptom of fatigue, not just a personal failing, can empower you to make a different choice, like having a healthy snack and prioritising an earlier bedtime.
