A Landmark Service for Konkan
In a move celebrated by commuters and tourists alike, Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in South Konkan. Flagged off on September 3, 2026, the service
addresses a long-standing demand for direct, daily connectivity to the region, which includes popular destinations like Kankavli, Kudal, and Sawantwadi. Previously, many Konkan-bound trains originated from other Mumbai terminals, but this new CSMT service provides a crucial, central starting point for thousands of passengers.
Route, Timings, and Comfort
The service operates as Train No. 15087 from CSMT and Train No. 15088 on its return from Sawantwadi Road. Designed for convenience, the train offers an overnight journey from Mumbai, departing CSMT at 11:55 PM and reaching Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. The return train leaves Sawantwadi at 5:20 PM, arriving back at CSMT at 6:40 AM, making it ideal for weekend trips and for those who need to return to the city for work. The train covers the 510-kilometre route with 22 stops at key stations including Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal. To ensure a comfortable journey, the service uses modern LHB coaches, with a composition that includes First Class AC, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper, and general second-class coaches.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
The new daily connection is more than just a convenience; it's a significant milestone for the Konkan region's development. Officials have highlighted its potential to provide a major boost to tourism by making destinations like the beaches of Tarkarli and the hill station of Amboli more accessible. Improved connectivity is expected to support local hotels, businesses, and create employment opportunities. Furthermore, it will facilitate easier travel for the thousands of people from the Konkan region who work in Mumbai, strengthening family and economic ties. Union Minister Piyush Goyal noted that the reliable link would also help local producers and fishermen transport their goods to Mumbai markets more efficiently.
Part of a Broader Connectivity Push
This CSMT-Sawantwadi Express is the latest in a series of efforts to enhance rail access to the Konkan. The launch comes just in time for the annual Ganesh Utsav, a period that sees a massive surge in travel from Mumbai to the region. To manage this rush, Indian Railways is already operating hundreds of special festival trains. This permanent daily service, however, represents a more sustainable solution to ease overcrowding on other existing trains. The introduction of this train complements other services on the route, including Vande Bharat expresses and various special trains announced during peak seasons, collectively creating a more robust and reliable rail network for passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also pointed to ongoing projects worth around ₹18,000 crore aimed at augmenting Mumbai's suburban rail capacity, which will further improve regional links.
