Beyond the 'Job-Eater' Hype
For years, the story of AI's impact on the workforce has been a simple, terrifying one: robots are coming for our jobs. This narrative, while compelling, is proving to be a blunt instrument for understanding a deeply nuanced shift. Recent analysis paints
a far more interesting picture. A Nomura report covering the period up to August 2026 found that for every job lost or impacted by AI in India, 2.6 new AI-related roles were created. Specifically, the country saw approximately 83,100 AI-related hires compared to 31,921 layoffs linked to the technology. This suggests the prevailing story isn't one of simple destruction, but of a dynamic reallocation of roles and responsibilities within the economy.
From Displacement to Redeployment
The data shows that AI is not a neutral force; it is a disruptive one that creates winners and losers. Many of the jobs being eliminated are routine, process-driven roles, such as support teams being replaced by chatbots. However, the jobs being created are in high-skill, specialised areas. LinkedIn's CEO, Dan Shapero, recently noted that AI engineering roles in India are surging, growing 51% year-on-year. The challenge is that the workers displaced by automation are rarely the same ones being hired for these new, complex roles. This creates significant 'distributional pain' and highlights a growing chasm in the labour market: a skills gap, not a jobs gap. NASSCOM estimates that India will need over a million AI professionals by 2027, but the current supply of trained talent is less than 20% of that demand.
The New In-Demand Skill Set
As companies shift from mass hiring for entry-level roles to seeking specialised expertise, a new portfolio of skills has become essential. Technical proficiency in Python, machine learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, data science, and cloud platforms like AWS or GCP forms the bedrock of most AI job descriptions. Generative AI skills, including prompt engineering and working with Large Language Models (LLMs), are the fastest-growing new category, with related job postings tripling between 2024 and 2026. Yet, technical skills alone are not enough. Employers are increasingly screening for 'human-centric' capabilities: analytical thinking, complex problem-solving, leadership, and the ability to frame business problems that AI can then help solve. The future-proof professional is one who can bridge the gap between technological capability and business application.
The Two-Tier Labour Market
This shift is creating what some economists describe as a 'two-tier' labour market. Demand and salaries are skyrocketing for experienced professionals who can architect and deploy AI systems. An upskilling report from Scaler noted average salary jumps of 147% for those transitioning into AI-enabled careers. However, the traditional pathway for fresh graduates is narrowing. Indian IT firms, which historically hired thousands from campuses and trained them on the job, are now recruiting fewer entry-level workers as AI automates routine tasks. This threatens the very model that built India's IT workforce. The new imperative for job seekers is to acquire demonstrable skills and project experience before they even enter the job market, as companies increasingly adopt a 'skills-first' hiring approach.
The Path Forward: Adaptation
The career case for the limits of AI job-loss narratives isn't one of naive optimism. It is a call for pragmatic adaptation. The data is clear: AI is creating significant opportunity, but it is not a tide that will lift all boats equally. For professionals, the message is one of continuous learning and upskilling in both technical and soft skills. For companies and policymakers, the challenge is to build bridges across the widening skills gap. This includes redesigning educational curricula, investing in corporate training, and creating new pathways into the workforce that do not rely on the disappearing entry-level roles of the past.
