Rann Utsav is a vibrant celebration of Kutchi culture, art, music, and dance held in the starkly beautiful Great Rann of Kutch. What started as a three-day event has blossomed into a grand, four-month-long festival that attracts visitors from around the globe.
Organized by Gujarat Tourism, it was conceived to showcase the region's unique heritage and stunning geography. The centerpiece is a sprawling, temporary Tent City near the village of Dhordo, offering an immersive cultural experience right on the edge of the white desert.
Festival Dates and Best Times to Visit
The 2026-2027 Rann Utsav is scheduled to run from November 1, 2026, to March 7, 2027, offering a long window to plan your trip. While the entire period is festive, the most magical time to visit is during a full moon, when the salt flats are bathed in an ethereal silver light. Key full moon periods for the upcoming season are November 23-25, 2026; December 22-24, 2026; January 21-23, 2027; and February 19-21, 2027. These dates, along with holiday weeks like Diwali and Christmas, are highly sought after, so booking well in advance is crucial.
Booking Your Stay at the Tent City
Accommodation is a key part of the Rann Utsav experience, with the Tent City at Dhordo being the most popular choice. It offers a range of options, from non-AC Swiss cottages to luxurious premium tents, all equipped with modern amenities. Packages are typically for 1, 2, or 3 nights and are all-inclusive, covering your stay, all vegetarian meals (with Jain options), and guided sightseeing tours. Bookings can be made through the official Rann Utsav website and affiliated tour operators. Given the festival's popularity, tents sell out quickly, especially for peak dates.
Must-Do Activities and Experiences
The festival is packed with activities from dawn till dusk. A camel cart ride to the white desert to witness the spectacular sunset is an absolute must. Evenings come alive with folk music and dance performances in the cultural area. During the day, you can indulge in adventure sports like ATV rides and paramotoring, or shop for exquisite local handicrafts, including Kutchi embroidery, Ajrakh block prints, and bell metal art. Many packages also include complimentary sightseeing trips to nearby attractions.
Exploring Beyond the Festival
While the Utsav is the main draw, the Kutch region offers more to explore. A trip to Kalo Dungar (Black Hill), the highest point in Kutch, provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Great Rann. It's also home to a 400-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. Other nearby points of interest include the historic city of Bhuj, with its Aina Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and Kutch Museum, and the craft village of Bhujodi, famous for its weavers. For a change of scenery, the serene Mandvi Beach is also within reach.
How to Get There
The gateway to Rann Utsav is the city of Bhuj, which has the nearest airport and a major railway station. Bhuj is well-connected by flights and trains from major Indian cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad. From Bhuj, the Tent City at Dhordo is approximately 85 km away, a journey of about 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Most official Rann Utsav packages include complimentary transfers from Bhuj airport or railway station to the Tent City in air-conditioned coaches at fixed times. Taxis are also readily available.
