West Bengal's rail infrastructure will see a significant upgrade, primarily through the construction of the fourth line between Kharagpur and Jharsuguda (Bagdehi). This project is crucial for decongesting one of the busiest sections in the country, which
serves as a vital artery for moving goods from eastern India's ports and industrial zones to the rest of the nation. For passengers, this means improved timeliness and the potential for more services. For industry, it promises a more fluid supply chain, especially for essential commodities that transit through the state. The expansion will enhance connectivity across 14 districts in the region, directly benefiting local economies and facilitating smoother travel.
Odisha: Powering Mineral and Freight Movement
As a state rich in mineral resources, Odisha's economy heavily relies on an efficient railway network for transporting materials like coal, iron, and steel. The expansion, particularly the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth line, will directly address the state's logistical needs. This will create additional capacity to handle an estimated 27 million tonnes of freight traffic per year, a significant boost for the state's industries. Beyond freight, the project will improve passenger connectivity to key destinations, including religious and tourist sites like the Taratarini Temple and the Shri Kshetra Jagannath Temple near Jharsuguda, making them more accessible to pilgrims and travellers.
Jharkhand: Unlocking Central India's Potential
Jharkhand is another key beneficiary of the newly approved multi-tracking projects. The upgrades are designed to alleviate chronic congestion on routes that are essential for the transport of the region's abundant natural resources. By adding more lines, Indian Railways aims to segregate passenger and goods traffic more effectively, leading to faster transit times for both. This enhanced capacity is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated planning to improve logistics efficiency. For the people of Jharkhand, this translates into more reliable train services and better connections to economic centres across the country.
Madhya Pradesh: Enhancing Heartland Connectivity
Madhya Pradesh sits at the heart of India, and its rail lines are critical for national connectivity. The state will benefit from the construction of the Katni-Pendra Road fourth line, a project designed to handle increasing traffic demands. This expansion will improve mobility across the region, connecting nearly 4,790 villages with a combined population of about 56 lakh people across the five beneficiary states. The upgrades will also improve access to tourist destinations within Madhya Pradesh, such as the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and the holy town of Amarkantak, fostering regional tourism and economic growth.
Chhattisgarh: Bolstering an Industrial Hub
Chhattisgarh's growing industrial base requires robust infrastructure, and the approved railway projects are set to provide just that. The state will see the development of the Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road third line and parts of the Katni-Pendra Road fourth line. These projects will add significant capacity to routes that are vital for moving coal, cement, and steel. By increasing the number of tracks, Indian Railways can run more trains, reduce delays, and ensure a smoother flow of goods to and from the state's industrial clusters. This expansion is expected to be completed by 2029-30 and will be instrumental in supporting Chhattisgarh's economic ambitions.
