The Challenge of Proving Your New Address
For anyone who has relocated within India, securing a valid proof of address is a familiar hurdle. Banks, government agencies, and other institutions require official documents to update their records. Traditionally, this meant producing a registered
rent agreement, recent utility bills in your name, or a sale deed. This created a significant challenge for many, including students moving into hostels, newly married individuals, senior citizens moving in with their children, or young professionals in shared accommodations who might not have any of these documents in their own name immediately after a move. The delay in getting these proofs could stall other important processes like opening a bank account, applying for a loan, or completing KYC (Know Your Customer) formalities.
A New, Flexible Option: The Head of Family (HoF) Method
To address this gap, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a resident-friendly feature for updating the address on an Aadhaar card. Known as the Head of Family (HoF) based update, this facility allows an individual to update their address online using the Aadhaar details of a relative they live with, such as a parent, spouse, or other family member. This method is specifically designed for those who lack supporting address documents in their own name. It essentially lets you leverage the established address proof of a family member to update your own, making the process significantly more accessible.
How the HoF-Based Update Works
The process is entirely online and consent-based. The applicant initiates the request through the 'My Aadhaar' portal. They must enter the Aadhaar number of their Head of Family for validation. To maintain privacy, no other details of the HoF are displayed. The applicant then needs to upload a Proof of Relationship document, such as a ration card, passport, marriage certificate, or marksheet that includes the names of both the applicant and the HoF. A nominal fee of ₹50 is charged for the service. Once submitted, the HoF receives an SMS notification and must log in to the portal to approve the request within 30 days. If the HoF approves it, the address is updated.
What if You Don't Have a Relationship Document?
Understanding that even procuring a Proof of Relationship document might be a challenge for some, UIDAI has provided an alternative. If a formal document is unavailable, the applicant can submit a self-declaration from the Head of Family in a UIDAI-prescribed format. This makes the system even more inclusive, relying on the consent and declaration of the family head rather than just official paperwork. This provision further simplifies the process for millions of people who move across the country for various reasons.
‘Current Status Preserved’: What It Means for You
The headline's assurance that the “current status is preserved” is a crucial point. The new HoF-based method is an additional, optional facility; it does not replace the traditional way of updating your address. You can still update your Aadhaar address by submitting any of the many valid Proof of Address (PoA) documents that UIDAI accepts. This list includes documents like registered rent agreements, passports, bank passbooks, and utility bills (electricity, water, gas) that are not older than three months. This dual system provides flexibility, allowing you to choose the method that is most convenient for your specific situation. If you have the documents, you can use them directly. If not, the HoF option provides a viable and official alternative.
